When to do away with the crib?

Yes, lots of questions tonight, sorry!

We'd like to take the crib down and have had a toddler bed set up for months. He shows no interest in it. Never even tried to get out of the crib.

He says he's going to sleep in the big boy bed often but when bedtime rolls around, he points to the crib and says "that one".  He's 2 1/2.

Problem is we bought the train table he's been begging for christmas and we need the wall the crib is on to put it up. His play room is full.

Am I in for a rough road to try to transition him?  Is he too young?  Should I just do it cold turkey, and take the darn crib down or will that first night be a nightmare?

Thanks!

  • We went cold turkey at 2 and he was fine.  Maybe talk it up and tell him if he sleeps in the big boy bed he can have his train table in his room?  Try having him nap in it first?

  • Oh i LOVe when they're in the crib....

I would show him the box for Christmas and just tell him when he's ready to sleep in his big boy bed, then you'll set up the train table.

That way HE will truly be deciding and it will make the transition easier.  Or maybe... :P

  • Eh, my kid is nearly 3 and I literally made the switch to toddler bed today.  He could climb in and out of the crib, but if we told him to stay in it, he would.  He also wouldn't get out of it until we went into his room in the morning. I'm learning its much different with a bed & wondering  what time I'll be up tomorrow morning.  If he's not ready, then don't move him - it might screw up the good sleeper that you have.  Besides, having him in a bed and a train table in the room might make it even more trouble.
  • We switch DD at 2.  It wasn't a problem.  I didn't really talk to her about it.  We started with a matress on the floor, now she has a box sping and a matress and we will probably leave it that way for a while because she is short and would have a hard time getting in and out if we put up the regular twin bed.
