Hi, I just read the FFC. I saw that you have tips on how to do creative things with cameras. I would LOVE it if you started a blog with tips. I have a Sony DSC N-1 and I have no idea how to take pictures in black and white or take pictures with a fuzzy background. I would love any tips you could give. So blog away sister!
Just my 0.02.

Just to butt in (sorry!) - if you just have a point and shoot digital, typically the portrait option (usually a sillouette of a person represents this on the camera somewhere) does the low apature (ie: blurry background/focused person) thing. If you can set it manually, on the apature setting you can just select the lowest # (1.8, 2.0, 4.0 etc) to get the same effect.
Black and white, imo, is best done after the photos are done! You can just desaturate or even in a lot of free programs select "black and white". Picnik is a good place to go for easy photo editing free!
seconding what destea said. also try NOT to use the on camera flash. i know that's hard this time of year since you're indoors a lot...but try setting up pictures by a window (not one with direct light flooding in) and keep the lights on in the room as well.
If this isn't an option try upping the ISO a bit, but I don't recommend going over 400. This will give you a little more leeway for exposure.
