So far it hasn't gotten too cold this year, so DS has just been wearing a fleece jacket. But when it does get colder, he has a heavier coat to wear. I know it's too thick for him to wear in his carseat. So what do you do? Just take off their coat to put them in the car and then put it back on when you get there?
Re: What do you do about heavy coat and carseat?
Unzip the coat in the car and put the straps under it. You can zip it back up before you leave the car.

Ditto pp.
We put a heavy blanket around DD (or her coat) for going out to the car, then we put her in her car seat (without coat), and put the coat on when we need to go in anywhere. It is a HUGE PITA, but I think it is better than the alternative.

DD has a fleece coat that isn't very bulky at all and hat. I warm up the car beforehand, and she just goes from the house to the car in the garage. Then, it's usually just from the car into daycare (like 20 feet) or into a store. I also have blankets in the car that I'll wrap around her legs if it's really cold outside, like this morning.
For longer car rides, I take the coat off in the car because she would get way too warm and the car is already warmed up.
If you are leaving the coat between the car seat and dc, that is still not safe. They need to be secured tightly between the seat belt and the car seat, the added cushion from the coat detracts from the safety of the seat belt.
We do the same as all other pps. It's a pita, but there aren't any other safe alternatives.

I made my own version of the baby bloak with a few changes. It was super easy!!
This is what it looks like when she's in her seat:
