Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What can I do?!

My ds has an awful cold.  He has so much mucus in his throat that he keeps throwing up b/c he's gagging on it.  I'm so worried he's going to get really dehydrated.  When I try to nurse him he has to break away every few seconds b/c his nose is so stuff he can't breathe ---- and then he's puking most of it up. The pedi's office doesn't open for another 2.5 hours.

Re: What can I do?!

  • do you have one of those blue bulb suckies you can stick in his nose and get some of the congestion out?  Poor baby.  i hope he feels better really soon.

Also, to try to help break some of it up, often times I'll take baby into the shower and make it really steamy.  That helps.

  • Use a humidifier and make sure he is close to it. Or, you can take him in the bathroom and sit him by hot steamy water for a while to help break the mucus up (just turn the shower on and stand by it while you hold him). Also--give him a dose of tylenol to help with symptoms.?

  • When my ds had an awful cold the pedi recommended using some saline spray (like Ocean Spray) to help clear his nose. ?He said don't spray it but to lay him down on his back and put one drop in each nose. ?It really helped. ??

  • trying bulbing his nose to try to suck out some of the mucus before it runs down his throat.  Also, get some of the "Little Noses" nose drops - they help!
  • I'm with you. My DD has a bad cold, too. She's has been up coughing all night as the mucus has been going into her throat, and then gagging up whatever I feed her.

I would keep trying to nurse him and aspirate his nose whenever you can get anything. Do you have saline spray to squirt up his nose? That will make him sneeze, which will release some of the stuffiness so he can eat a little bit.

Does your doctor have an after-hours doctor on call you can use? I had to use that number the other day and I'm glad I did because it turned out DD had a double ear infection, too.

  • I second the steamy shower. Also, if he sounds sort of croupy, you can take him in the steamy shower and then walk outside for a minute or two. The effect of being in the steam and then in the cold might release some of the swelling in his throat.

  • DD has similar symptoms this past week. The steamy shower did the trick for us. Within 5 mins she spit up lots of mucus. She felt much better after that! Good luck, poor baby!
  • thank you. the mucus isn't really in his nose even though it's making it hard for him to breathe... it's in his throat.  It's very runny too. He sneezed and a huge runny glob came out.

  • You need to use the blub sucker and get it out of his nose.  He probably will hate it, but he will be able to breathe easier.  Also run a cool mist vaporizer.  They are wonderful.  Hang in there.  I know it sucks when the babies are sick.
  • On top of all pp's advise keep him upright for awhile.  I have to sit him on my lap for awhile before BFing.
