XP: Sippy cup training?

How did you get your little one to start using a sippy cup?  What did you put in it, did you show them how to use it, or just let them play with it?  How often do you try it?  I have no idea!  I tried one kind and he liked to play with the handles and hold it but didn't seem at all interested in getting anything from it.  I bought a different kind to try today, but I'm not really sure if there is a method to teaching them to use a sippy.  Any help is appreciated, I feel dumb not really knowing what to do.  Where is that user manual?

  • I started her with one around 7 months. She just bit it and didn't know what to do with it. I ended up getting a Gerber Orthodontic one that has a latex spout and she'll drink formula out of it but still just spits out water. I just keep trying every once in a while. It helped if I gave it to her at an incline, like in a bouncy seat or while I hold her. She doesn't get to tip it up yet. I say just try it out whenever you feed solids and if he doesn't like it, put it away and try again in a week or so.

  • We are in the same boat. We introduced the sippy cup - an Avent trainer - the other night. DS just bangs it on the highchair tray and plays with it. He puts the spout in his mouth, but blows on it instead of suck. I have no idea how to teach him that it's a drink??

  • We started giving it to dd around 5 months with just water in it (every now and then we'll add a little bit of white grape juice to make the water sweet).  We had to try several different types of sippy in order to find one that she liked.  She seems to live the Nuby soft spout one (warning: it does leak when they bite down on the nipple...the water comes out really quickly).  She also does okay with the Avent soft spout.  At first she just played with it and then one day she tipped it back and got some of the water out.  Ever since then, she's been drinking it.  Sometimes she still plays with it, but she knows what it's for.  Also, daycare gives her a sippy everyday.  They said babies learn very well from watching older children use the sippy.

  • I started replacing the bottles with sippy cups filled with formula.  I think it was around 9 months old.  My son was never interested in drinking water from the cup until he really became confortable with sippy cups.  We started with a soft spout, a NUBY cup.  Now we use a combination of soft and hard spouts.  IMO, you have to decide when to make the switch, and just do it.  If you continue to offer the bottle, they will be less willing to use the sippy.
