Babies: 9 - 12 Months

? about premature labor

I have a friend that is in the hospital right now.  She is due at the end of January.  She lost her mucus plug and started contractions last night.  Is this something that can be stopped?

Also her baby's intestines are growing on the outside of the body.  Did anybody have this complication?

Forgive me for being dumb about this, I was fortunate to a have an "easy" pregnancy if there is such a thing.

Also please pray for her and her baby!  TIA

Re: ? about premature labor

  • I went into preterm labor and they were able to keep me pregnant for about a month.  It really depends on if she's progressing (dilating).

Not sure about the intestines thing... scary!  I hope everything turns out OK.  Keep us posted.

  • My dad actually had a similar intestinal thing when he was born.  They had to do surgery on him.  He's fine now.  He actually has what we like to call a cast iron stomach.  He can eat anything.

  • Sometimes they can stop it sometimes they can't.  I was fortunate and down right blessed.  I started preterm in October, hospitilized in November (wk of thanksgiving actually), FFN was positive and MP were lost in Dec, BUT we held out until 37 wks to the day!!!!!!!!!!!

It was really a miracle.  Some are not that lucky to no fault of thier own.  If your pal doesn't hold out make sure she understands that sometimes these things can't be helped.

The best advice I can give is FOLLOW THE DOCTORS ORDERS!!!!  I hated being on the nest and women were like "I'm on bed rest but I am sick of it so I'm going out to dinner" or "the meds just didn't make me feel good".  If the doctor says take 19,000 pills and shots a day to stop labor than you need to do it.  If they say strict bed rest that means STRICT BED REST (not I'm cleaning the house and I can see my bed from here).  If he says modified, that doesn't mean going out to dinner or Christmas shopping.

I'll say a prayer for your friend, gosh I remember how scary all of that is!!!
