What does the melamine in formula mean?

Forgive me, but, what's with all the hysteria and the melamine in the formula?  Can someone give me the short story since it's slow?

    Melamine is a chemical that can cause kidney damage in infants if ingested. They found melamine in a number of products in China, including baby formula, and some of the babies that ingested the formula died. The amount found in China appears to be much higher than what's been found here. For what it's worth, melamine can be found in a lot of packaging and can leach into foods. But no amount of melamine is safe in the body, which is why the fuss is going on.

    And that would be per the article, some CNN stuff I read when the China story broke, and per DH, who is a chemistry teacher.

    Melamine = plastic.

    Melamine/plastic traces have now been detected in formula sold in the US. 

    One can read about these things in the posts below marked "Melamine in baby formula" or "Formula with Melamine?" or by going to www.google.com and typing in "Melamine and Formula."
