chelle828--re :adenosine

it is such a scary drug. I made the nurse promise me that it wouldn't kill S.

she was coding--her heart rate was over 300 for over an hour. February 14 will be the one year anniversary of ?our ICU stay. :( ?they want to start titrating her meds down and it scares the shit out of me and DH!?

you have a tough job! I couldn't say enough about our nurses during our stay! they were fabulous!?

  • I'm so sorry to hear what you went through!!  I'll keep you in my prayers.  I love being a nurse.  It's a second career for me actually.  I'm actually trying to get into NICU nursing at the moment, but I certainly don't look forward to those situations.  I can remember the code I was in and saw it used - I sat there and held my breath as the woman's heart rate raced, dropped, stopped and finally started again.  I can't begin to imagine if it was my child.  You are very very strong and your DD is lucky to have such a mom!!

  • oh god! thanks. you just do what you have to for your baby! anything at all, kwim?

S was in the pedi-ICU so it was such a tiny unit only 6 beds and she basically had a private nurse. she was there for 5 days.

she is doing great though. the only thing that she is restricted from is caffeine (so that means no chocolate) but other than that anything goes.

the scarier thing is even when her heart rate was that high she had no visible symptoms. the nursing supervisor came for the code and she left in the middle of it. after everything was ok she pulled me aside and said she couldn't believe S. I guess I had the "I don't get it" look on my face. so she told me that usually kids with a heart rate like that are blue and unconscious. the nursing supervisor was trying to distract S so she was waving at her and smiling while of course all hell was breaking loose. she was screaming, etc. well in the middle of it S stopped freaking out for a second and smiled and waved back at the nursing supervisor. she said she almost hit the floor--she couldn't believe it.
