NPR: Does anyone have bamboo shades?

Do they block light at all?  Keep the room hot/cold, or just for decorative purposes?

 I am considering them for our bedroom.

We had them in our last house, but we put them up on top of the Venetian blinds.  They were pretty much just decorative, but were good for when we wanted privacy but to still let light into the room.

We have them in the kitchen.  I wouldn't recommend them for the bedroom though, you can see through them a bit.
