When should I worry about weight gain? The other day my preemie weighted 3 lbs. and 10 oz. Today, her weight is 3 lbs. 5 oz. The doctor wasn't concerned.
MY DD was born at 4 lbs and 9 oz, she left the hospital at 4 lbs and 12 oz. At her first visit to the pedi, the doctor said she should gain about an ounce a day which seemed like a lot to me. The first week she only gained an average of half an ounce a day, then I got more strict with her feedings. She has since gained an average of about an ounce a day. I had to make sure to feed her every 3 hours, sometimes I would have to wake her up. We also had to change her formula from Neosure to Gentlease because she was having stomach issues. People have different opinions on waking a baby up to eat because they burn energy when they are awake and it might be conunterproductive, but it worked for us. Your baby is smaller so I don't know if the one ounce a day is realistic, but I would think the weight should always go up unless there is a problem like they are sick or something.
