:::lays on floor in shock:::

I was looking for the owner's manual for my sewing machine online, and despite the model, the year it was made dictates the manual needed.  So I took the portable base off the bottom of my machine, wrote down the serial #, and looked it up on the Singer website.

And now I lay here on the floor in shock.

I always was told the machine was from the mid-60's just before Singer's quality fell to pieces.  I was told wrong.

1951.  My sewing machine is twice my age.  Tell me my machine is the same machine and that using it won't break it.  Remind me that every part of it's motor is steel and it was made to run forever.

  • My friend has an old antique black Singer and it works great.

  • I have an old singer as well, though I can't remember the year off the top of my head.  My grandfather bought it for my mom second hand when she was in high school.  Apparently, a man had traded it in for a new one to surprise his wife.  My mom still wonders how mad the wife was when she found out!

    I think you're right, though, it will last forever!

  • Maybe this sounds crazy, BUT, I have used that machine for years.  It's as close to perfect as a machine gets.  It's just that, well, something made in the mid-60's isn't as mentally valuable to me as something made 15 years earlier.  This was my Grand-ma's machine, and now it's even more precious.  I guess that's about as well as I can explain it.  I'm just sorta scared I'll break it now, which is damn near impossible.  And, I feel a little better since I've been sewing on the dining room drapes since I made this post.

  • I have a super old singer too-- you make me want to check the model now-- but the only issue I have is its a bit squeaky from lack of use.  I just covinced my mom to give it to me last month!

  • It's actually less likely to wear out than a newer machine. My mom's machine is from the late 60s/early 70s and there were parts inside it made of nylon or some sort of plastic - they wore out and the singer repair shop says it can't be fixed. They can fix the older ones with metal parts, but they usually don't break that way. I have grandma's machine and it will never die (and weighs a freaking ton!)
