Vent: "Try for 6 more months"!

ARGH!  I'm so frustrated!  My doctor wants us to try for 6 more months on our own before we get help.  We haven't been preventing for right at 2 years, but have only been actively trying (with OPK's, temping, etc) for about 6 months.  Since we were already able to have a child on our own, I understand where he is coming from, BUT....

My cycles are much different now than they were the first time around!  I ovulate around day 20, and my luteal phase is only 9 days long.  I mentioned a LPD, but he didn't think it was a possibility (because we already have a child)!  What is the point of trying on our own, if my body isn't working the way it's supposed to?  I don't get it!  I already take B6 to try to help, but no luck so far.

I want to trust my doctor, but at the same time, I feel like I know my body better than he does!  So, I'm just frustrated.  Thanks for letting me vent!

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. It took us 14 cycles to ttc#2. If your insurance doesn't require a referral, try to make an appointment with a RE. It was the best thing we ever did. While my ob/gyn supported us seeing the RE whenever we were ready, she really felt I would get pregnant on my own.

  • I agree with the pp.  If you don't need a referral, I would call an RE.

  • my OB told me the exact same thing.  We have been TTC for 13 months and I went to see her last month and she told me to try for another 6 months since my periods have only been regular for 6 months.  Very frustrating!

  • I would try another OB. this one is obviously not listening.  I got diagnosed with IF w/in 3 mos of temping/charting/OPKs.  It was OBVIOUS something was wrong.  I showed it to my OB and I was in w/an RE with in a week and positively diagnosed a few wks after.  One needs a doctor they can count on to listen to them!

  • I would either see an RE or if you can't self-refer then I would see an OB/GYN who is a fertility specialist. I have recs for both if you are interested at any point. I went through the same thing with my OB after my m/c. I knew my cycles were really screwy (they always had been) and I knew my lp was too short. He wouldn't take me seriously because we had gotten pg once before. He kept dismissing my concerns. I decided to give him one more shot before changing doctors and I went in with all my charts, etc. and with DH in tow because I thought he would be better at putting the pressure on. For whatever reason the doctor finally listened and ordered testing. He went ahead and randomly ordered an SA for DH and when we got the results back it was obvious that he couldn't help us and he referred us to an RE right away. If he hadn't listened to me then I would have changed to an OB/GYN who specializes in fertilty since I couldn't self-refer to an RE. I wouldn't stay with someone who wouldn't take my concerns seriously. That's what you are paying them for!

  • I'm with the other ladies on seeing an RE instead. Good luck!
  • If  I were you I would try another gynae.  Even better would be to get to see an RE.

Your doctor is supposed to listen to you.  Just because you have one child doesn't mean that they can't take you seriously when you go to them with documented wacked out cycles.

Could it be an insurance thing?  I know my insurance defines infertility as actively trying for 12 months without success and they won't pay out for anything infertility related until then.  Or until you get diagnosed with something that definitely shows IF.  It's a 'which came first - chicken or the egg' situation but maybe if you tried a different doc they could work with you to find out what is wrong.

My gynae didn't put anything IF related on my paperwork when he was testing me for my PCOS for precisely that reason.  They just said I was annovulatory and they were testing to find out why.  Insurance covered it without question.

  • If I have learned nothing else from my 3+ year adventure in trying to have a baby it is that the squeeky wheel gets the oil.

Take my OB for example. She told me that I should not have another baby for 2 years at least to let my uterus heal. Um, what? I was just at the RE yesterday and had a procedure where they examine your uterus to see if you can move on to more treatment...if I listened to the OB I would add another 2 years to my journey.

Call your OB and first say that you are not happy with his reasoning and that you would like more action taken because your body has changed! My goodness, our bodies can change from one cycle to the next, how does he just ignore that?
