2nd Trimester

XP: Tipped uterus?

OB mentioned during my exam today that I have a tipped uterus. I guess I was so concentrating on not farting on her that I didn't ask what that meant, if anything.

I Googled it and finally found a picture of what it meant internally, but I'm curious to know if anyone else here has/had that, and what it meant for your pregnancy. TIA!

Re: XP: Tipped uterus?

  • Yeah, a retroverted uterus is really common. Something like 20% of women have one. No biggies, just means it might face towards your back. It will right itself as you go along in your pregnancy.

  • I have the same thing. Some people have said that you may not feel the baby move until later, but I felt the baby move pretty early. So, that wasn't true for me. I am pretty sure your uterus moves into a normal place at some point and everything is as it should be. Not a big deal.

    LOL!!!

I dont know what it means, I just had to let you know that THAT was funny!

  • yep, me! Mine is and my doctor said that it may mean that you have more lower back pain w/ menstrual cycles and with pregnancy.  Also, he told me that It should move more forward as you move into 2nd trimester & it shouldn't cause any issues for the pregnancy.  He said they use to believe it meant it was harder to conceive, but as we both know, that's not the case now is it!

It's not anything to be really concerned about from the impression I received from my doctor, but if you feel very worried I would definitely call and ask questions! :)

  • I have a tipped uterus as well. Mine seems to have 'righted' itself as expected.

As PP mentioned, it's pretty common. Before we were ttc, my doc explained it as similar to being left-handed. No problems associated with it, just something that is found in a certain subset of the population.

  • Forgot to mention that yes, I have one too. Mine completey tiled towards my lower back and it's already facing the correct place. My doc could feel it at my appt just 3 days ago.

  • I read online today that if you have a tipped uterus, that you're target for more pain during sex. Which DUH! is totally true at least for me, and now explains some things.

Any of the rest of you with a T.U. have pain like that?

  • I also have it. The doc did mention to me that I may experience pain during sex with a tipped uterus.

  • I have a tilted uterus too. After DS my uterus didnt set back in the right position. Sex was horribly painful!!  Conception was easy (some have difficulties) My doctor described a tilted uterus from his point of view and the pain during sex made sense. He described it as if you are looking at your cervix a "normal" uterus is laying upwards (pointing up) In a tipped or tilted uterus your uterus is pointing downwards. The reason why painful sex hurting made sense is because a penis naturally curves upwards to conture to the shape of the uterus, when your uterus is titled it the penis is basically poking you in the side of your uterus. By doing so it also puts pressure on your bowels. Since the baby in my belly has pushed up my uterus sex isnt painful during pregnancy! Its wonderful to enjoy sex and not have pain and misery wishing the DH would just get the F*** off already! My OB did mention that after this pregnancy it may set back to the upward position, and Im praying to god it does because the lack of sex before pregnancy was putting a strain on my marrige. Sorry its so long, hoped it helped.
