2nd Trimester

question for those who had had big u/s

mine is scheduled for next week and I already have anxiety about peeing....I was reading the directions and they say to go pee 90 min before and then 60 min before drink however many oz of water.  Well, like most of us, I go to the bathroom every 20-30 minutes.  I will do my best, but that is a LONG time!  anyways, just looking for words of advice, or if having a really full bladder is REALLY that important.  thanks!

Re: question for those who had had big u/s

  • I had an empty bladder... they made me pee before the u/s b/c she did a vaginal u/s first to make sure my cervix was still closed...  my photos were perfect... and Weston showed us the goods with no problem!

    Good luck...

  • i wasn't required to have a full bladder.
  • I have heard so many different things on this topic. I peed right before I went in the room and we could see everything. Our ultrasound was at 20 weeks.?

  • Every place you can go and get an ultrasound is different.  Every ultrasound tech is different.  I had to have a full bladder, but halfway through, my tech made me empty it, to see if the baby would move.  Some people here have filled their bladder and then had to empty it before they would start the ultrasound.

Try not to think about the fact that you have to pee.  And, 60 mins before is ok, since it'll take some time for it to go to your bladder...you wont feel it until probably 20-30 mins before...so it'll be nice and full before the ultrasound.  HTH!

  • Ok, when I scheduled the u/s through the OBGYN, the receptionist told me to have a full bladder.

The day of my u/s, I layed down and the tech asks, "You don't have a full bladder, do you?"

I said yes, that's what I was told.

She rolled her eyes and told me to go empty it. It's mean to make a pg lady in her 2nd tri have a full bladder.

I would call someone at the u/s desk and ask them to make sure.

  • I had to drink water.  I didn't drink as much as they said to, though.  I know the limits of my bladder!

BUT - I did forget to drink the water ahead of time, and they actually did have a problem seeing some things at first, until my bladder did fill up.  So if they say to have a full bladder, have a full bladder.

The next U/s I went in for, I was REALLY full and after she got the important stuff, she let me pee before continuing.

  • I was told to have a full bladder. My best friend told me that when she had hers she drank a lot of water before she got there and then had to wait a while before her u/s started and was in pain because her bladder was so full. I started drinking  32 oz of water 2 hrs before and finished it in the waiting room. The tech said my bladder wasn't full enough to get a good look at the position of the placenta when she first started so she had to go back and look at it again. My bladder never got really full. Hope this info helps

  • They didn't say a thing to me about when to pee or what to drink and the images came out great.

Whoever made that rule was def not a pregnant woman!!! I think if you pee 60 minutes before your appt time and drink some water beforehand you would still have a pretty full bladder!

  • thanks ladies... Smile

I'll do my best and heopfully they let me empty it before they press TOO hard!

  • I didn't have to drink anything extra - they wanted me to come with a fairly empty bladder, and I was not given any other instructions.

I wonder why some places make you drink a ton and others don't?

  • I was required to have a full bladder and was almost in pain in the waiting room.  When we went in, she laughed at the ultrasound and called me an overachiever.  She did my measurements, let me go to the bathroom, and then came back for all the fun baby views!  She wanted me to be comfortable, but I think she just didn't want to clean up a mess ;)
  • I just went to the restroom before having the ultrasound. There were no instructions of full or empty bladder when I had mine...
  • They didn't tell me either way, so I just made an assumption and filled before my appointment. My tech said it wasn't necessary and let me go before the u/s even started.
  • Each office seems to be different. My office told me to have a full bladder, but that was because it pushes the baby and cervix above your pelvic bone so that they can get all of the baby's measurements and measure your cervix. Other offices may have different procedures how to measure the cervix?

  • All they had me do is pee when I arrived. They told me I had to have an empty bladder before the u/s.
  • I called a week before the appt and they said empty bladder at my doctor.  I went yesterday with an empty bladder and it was all fine.   I think early on you need a full bladder to push the uterus up so it can be seen better.

  • I asked the Ultrasound tech about this because I was not required to have a full bladder but a lot of my friends told me they were.  She told me it all depends on the machine.  When you have to have a full bladder the doctor usually has an older or not as advanced US machine.  I guess with the new machines that can do the 3-D and 4-D Ultrasounds it is not longer required.  Good luck I dont think I would have been able to make it myself Smile
  •

I also went potty right before and they were able to see baby just fine

  • I drink alot of water all day. ?I didn't drink any extra for the ultrasound. ?I was fine. ?I ended up peeing 1/2 hour before the appointment and then the let me go when I was finished with the ultrasound. ?It was not bad at all.
