I got a flu shot today and had an allergic reaction ( I've gotten one for the last 5 years never had this happen). Anyway I went to the the dr and the nurse who saw me first said "Why would you get a flu shoot your pg? Huh, I said "because my dr recommended it and so does Kaiser" She said " i hate that they do it, you just introduced a antibodies to our baby that you didn't need to". How rude I already got it!
Re: nurse siad I shouldn't have gotten flu shot
DH tells me this on a daily basis when he comes home from work frustrated.
but there are some great nurses out there!!
natural m/c and d&c at 10 weeks - 1/24/2014
DX w/ hetero C677t and A1298C MTHFR - 3/4/2014
That is just strange! I told my OB I hadn't had a flu shot at my last appointment and she had the nurse run right in and give both me AND my DH one.
I had a co-worker tell me today that her holistic doctor said not to get a flu shot because of the KNOWN association with cancer (WTF???).
I'm sorry you had a reaction to your shot! I say you did the right thing to get it. I've never had one before, but I did it for baby. I hope you feel better soon.
If you still feel upset in the morning, I would make a complaint. That nurse has absolutely no right to freak out a pregnant woman OR to contradict your doctor's medical advice.
The flu shot is completely recommended for pregnant women. ?My OB has a big sign up in every exam room explaining why we should get one.
Also, it's true that not all nurses are smart, but believe me, there are some dumb doctors out there too. ??
I dont find it rude, she was making a statement. She wasnt critizing (sp) you.
You better say that! hehe. The main thing that convinced me to get one is that you can pass the antibodies/immunity on to baby. Since I'm having my baby in April, which was one of the busies months last year in my state, I think it's important for baby to have that immunity passed on to him/her since baby can't recieve a flu shot until he/she is 6 months old or older. It's not like you went into anaphylactic shock. I'd say the rewards outweight the risk.
Also make sure its thimerosol (sp?) free. Unless your state is dumb like Idaho, and doesn't carry this kind. Jerks. It may not have been rude per se, but it was incredibly ignorant for a nurse to be so out of touch with the current guidelines for flu shots and pregnant patients. I feel sorry for the doctors she works with...I had an assistant once who was, let's say, a little misinformed. It was a huge task to go around calming upset patients because she would 'inform' them of things that weren't even remotely accurate.
That nurse is an idiot. When I asked my OB about the flu shot she immediately said get it and asked if I wanted it right then. In 5 minutes the nurse came in to give it to me.
I found that the shot this year burned and I got a welt next to it. A rash, but not itchy. It lasted a few hours.
My OB got hers and she got a huge bruise from it and she said that's never happened.
Must be this year's formulation. I almost jumped off the table it burned so bad.
