Need ideas for DH's bday

He's turning 40 this year, so I want to do something special.  But ... it's not really in the budget.  I was hoping we could go down to the casino with some friends, I could pay for sushi/tapas for dinner and then everyone would be on their own.  I was also hoping we could stay overnight at the hotel, but rooms are going for $300 a piece!  Not to mention, I'm not really sure who would stay with our kids either.  I checked out another casino and the rooms are cheaper, but the restaurants and clubs aren't as fun.

I think it would cost just about as much if we did something at our house or went to another restaurant.  It'll be winter in the midwest, so I really liked the idea of going to one place for the whole night.  I guess I could have everyone over for heavy apps and then send DH out with the boys for a boys night out.  He'd probably like that more than going to the casino with me!

Any other ideas?

My friend invited people to the comedy club to celebrate her husband's 40th bday.  They kind of did it like a party where there were a few decorations and he got a small cake....our tickets to get in were taken care of already by the wife.  It was nice and quite funny they way they did it there.
