I'm a pathetic dog owner...bawling because my puppy is deaf!

Just got off the phone with the vet....it sounds like Nikki is definitely deaf.  I have to bring her in just to make sure there isnt some other underlying issue.

I feel like it is one my own kids being diagnosed as deaf....I'm heartbroken...its pathetic I know but my dogs are like my own kids.

Very ironic that I, as a deaf person, ends up with a deaf dog lol

I could use a hug though!

  • {hugs}  but a deaf dog can still be a great pet, it just might be a little harder to train her and you'll really have to watch letter her outside now, since she wont be able to hear you yelling for her, ect.

  • My original thought was half-joking....but perhaps a little true.  You can sympathize with her.

    Poor doggie.

  • And here is your huge hug:   Right Hug
  • not a pet owner myself but i can sympathize.  hugs!

  • I believe that there is a plan for everything and that you were most likely meant to get this dog. Yes, it will be challenging, but you'd be surprised. Good luck!

  • (((hug))) My cocker spaniel was deaf. She was a great dog, and could communicate with us still.
  • That's not pathetic --- I would be the same way.

Good news is that most commands are taught not only in voice but in hand movement --- so you should be ok as far as training (as long as you learn the signals).

  • are you talking about your new puppy or an older dog that you already had?

either way, you will be a great mommy. Here is a big hug Left HugRight Hug

  • *hugs* You are not a pathetic dog owner. I would be bawling too!

I wasn't trying to suggest in my post earlier that YOU would have your puppy put down, I meant that it's common for breeders to put down puppies that have physical issues. Sorry if it sounded like that.

We are pretty sure our puppy has vision and hearing loss. She was one of two in her litter that appeared to not have any physical problems. Three of the puppies were deaf and one was deaf and blind. We're pretty lucky that she and our other dog are like peas in a pod. All of the puppies did find home despite their disabilities.

  • ((hugs))  I'm sure you'll both work out a way to communicate.

  • My cousin has a dalmatian (from the same litter as one of my dals) that is deaf.  They haven't worked nearly as hard actually training her as they should have but she is still a great dog.  The only drawback is she is a bolter.  When she gets out she is out for a while and it is hard to get her back.

I think you will handle it great.
