I got the Via Venezia from Starbucks and all the reveiws raved that it was just like the Barista.  I wish they still had the Barista.  I've taken it back twice already for a malfunctioning steam button.  The next one will not be exchanged but returned for a refund.

How much do you want to spend?  I did some research a few years ago for a Christmas gift but was looking to spend $50-75.  Bottom line is you need to spend a lot more $$ than that to get a decent espresso machine.  I got a recommendation for a stove top espresso maker, which is the primary kind used in Europe still.  It was about $20-30 and made an excellent espresso.  You just heat the milk in the microwave or on the stove and then froth with a milk frother.
