Stripping Membranes

Hi Ladies,

I know this has been brought up before but I wasn't able to find the thread.  So please forgive me on the duplicate!!

I just had a check up with my OB and next week I have the option of membrane scraping/stripping.  I have a week to think about it and thought I would bring it up and see what everyone's thoughts were. Any STM's have this done?  Was it effective? Painful?

I have read up on it a bit and still none the wiser!!  Just curious what other opinions are on this. TIA.

Re: Stripping Membranes

  • I had it done with my first. It hurt and did absolutely nothing to get me into labor. I don't think I am going to even try it with this one if it is given as an option.

  • I had it done 3 times with my first. I still had to be induced a week after the 3rd time. In my opinion, it's uncomfortable and unnecessary.

  • I has it done at 38 and 2 with Austin. My MW was getting concerned with Austin's heart rate dropping all the time and so it was an attempt to get me to go into labor without inducing I went into labor the next night and had him early the next morning. I had alot of problems with labor the second time, and was extremely close to having to go in for an emergency c. But I think that the stripping is apart of the reason I did go into labor.

It didn't really hurt I was just uncomfortable later that night and all day the next day.

  • My OB told me it will only work if your body is ready to go into labor and if it does work, it will typically take its effect with 48 hours. If your body isn't ready for labor, it can cause some cramping and bleeding but that's about it.

Doesnt it increase risk of infection as well?  I think i remember hearing this in birth class

I was never told that just that there was a chance that it wouldn't work or it would make labor more intense if it did work. But I could be wrong

  • I've never had it done but I don't think I would consider it until 40+ weeks.

I've heard it does hurt and doesn't really work unless baby is ready.

  • My OB has made it clear that it could go either way. Which is why I am on the fence about it.

I guess I have a week to mull it over!!

  • Whenever the topic of membrane stripping comes up I always get the visual of a strip club in my head. Makes me giggle every time.

  • I had it done with DD and two days later I was in L&D having a baby! It was painful, during felt like a lot of pressure and after it was done I had period like cramps. I would do it again this time, but I'm being induced because of complications. However it doesn't start labor for everyone.
  • Was wondering the same thing, thanks for asking!
  • Had it done with DS at 40w1d and my water broke the next day at home.  It hurt and I was super uncomfortable for hours afterward.

This. It's awful. Don't do it.

  • My OB just mentioned it today and I hadn't done my research yet but, thanks to you ladies I think I'll just skip it. I wasn't too fond if the idea before I knew what it was about. I'll pass!

  • My MW has never brought it up and I haven't thought to either. Maybe I will ask her thoughts on it next week.
