What are your LO's eating?

N's pedi gave us the green light with "big people" food. He hasn't had too much. I feel so terrified to give him anything for fear he will choke. He mostly does purees still. Are any of you feeling this way as well? He's definitely more interested in our food these days and I feel bad.

Re: What are your LO's eating?

  • He's eating pretty much what we're eating...for example, last night he had some roasted salmon that I flaked into small pieces, and some zucchini that was sauteed to the point where it was very soft, and I cut it into pieces. Or, you could just take whatever you're eating and put it in a food processor for a minute to grind it up. As long as it's soft/mushable, I give it to LO.

  • Gray didn't really ever get into purees.  He'll eat the pouch ones sometimes and will eat purees mixed with yogurt.  But otherwise he wants our food.  And he wants to eat it while we're eating it.  Some babies just like that...actually the more and more I talk to other moms around this age I think most babies prefer it.  As long as it's something he can mush with his gums (or his teeth if he has them), and as long as it's small enough, give it a try.  I find we do better if I hand feed it to him rather than put it on his tray or feed him with his plastic fork.  But that's something I'll work on in time.  They're still young enough that at this point it's all about discovering what they like and getting them to get into solids.

  • DS only ate purees for about a month or so; after that, I switched to "fork-mashed" consistency.  Then he started refusing the spoon (at 6.5 months), so we've been doing BLW-style foods where DS can self-feed.  We started off with spears of foods, but now his grasp is much better so I let him eat whatever we're having (that is soft).

Last night I made a farro watermelon salad, and a caprese salad (using cherry tomatoes).  DS had cubes of watermelon, and halved cherry tomatoes, as well as cubed mozzarella.

breakfast is always fruits of some sorts - depends on the season and what I buy for the week.  Lately it's halved blueberries or cubed cantaloupe, or peach slices, or mango spears.

  • B's still mostly on purees.  We've just started giving him what we're eating.  He's showing a lot of interest in our plates.  Last night we had spaghetti and I cut some up and gave him a few fork fulls.  I'll slowly introduce new things when I cook.  But for now he's very happy with the variety of purees I give him.

I give him mostly what we eat. Fruits veggie meats pasta bread. I give him some pures and cereal for breakfast. He loves to feed himself. I just cut or tear into small pieces.

  • Last night we had baked chicken and string beans with rice.  I pretty much shredded some chicken for her and cut the string beans up real small.  She was a very happy camper.  We're slowly letting her have what we have.  Avocado is great, same with beans and soft fruits and veggies, and steamed veggies.  Tonight is tacos, so DD will have some black beans, avocado, and some tomatoes. We may try the beef again, it didn't go too well last time!

  • DD is trying pretty much whatever we are eating. Even if it is only a few little bites. She is still mostly purees, yogurt, and oatmeal for the bulk of her meals.
