Help me out pierced ears

SD has her ears pierced and has been doing a lot of swimming the last few days. I didn't really think anything of it since DD has earrings and has never had a problem. (DD's are gold) I am not sure what SD's are. She now has a lovely infection in both ears and one side is so bad I can't remove the earring. The back came off no problem but the post is stuck with the gunk that is in there with it and won't budge. It might if we force it but she is already crying. Any tips? It really needs to be cleaned. I am reluctant to even pull it out because I am afraid it may close due to the infection however the inside needs to be cleaned badly.

Re: Help me out pierced ears

  • I always use Sea Breeze astringent on my ears. I got the tip from the tattoo place where I got my belly button pierced back in the day. It doesn't sting very much (just a tiny bit) and feels so much better. Poor thing! I would try something like that.

  • Bactine is what I've always used for new piercings and when my nose piercing got infected.  Hydrogen peroxide should also work.

  • Warm water might help to wash away the stuff.  Then my mom would take the earring out and soak the earring in hydrogen peroxide.  Once they are cleaned, she would put it back in and clean daily.

    agree

Or make your own sea salt/warm water mixture.

This is what my mom did too!

Gently keep trying to remove the earrings. Have them cleaned with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Use neosporin or another kind of over the counter antibiotic ointment on the lobes.

The holes shouldn't close. It should take a week at most to clear up the ears. I've had earrings in and out for years without a problem with the holes closing.

Good luck! I've seen them get pretty nasty so the sooner the better on getting them cleaned up.
  • Peroxide should help. When I wear earrings after having them out for a long time, I always wipe them down with the stuff you get for new piercings or they will get infected. Once they are infected the only thing that helps mine is peroxide. Hope it clears up soon.

  • What PP said. I wouldn't take the earrings out...or if you do clean them and put them back in. You don't want the bad stuff getting stuck in there.

  • If you haven't gotten the earring out yet, you may want to try to ice her love down. It will numb things up a bit so it won't hurt as much to get it out. I would clean the hole with water and peroxide and then put some neosporin on the earring post and put the earring in the hole and pull it back out again to get some of the ointment into the hole. Let the hole dry out and heal a bit before you try to keep earrings in full time again. It should take more than a few days for the holes to close permenantly. Good luck!

  • OMG!! After looking at it closer, this earring has a double back to it and the plastic part has gone INTO the back of her ear which is the reason that we can't pull it through. I feel so bad because I am going to have to hurt her to get it out. I pushed the earring and it is way in there. I can't get my fingernail around the base to get it out so I am going to try some tweezers.

My mom did this too but she would before putting my earring in for me dip the tip into antibiotic and put it in. It always helped with my war infections

  • Poor thing. I agree with pp hydrogen peroxide will dry out the infection and keep the area clean. If you can hoops in the holes that might ease the pain cause the lobe won't be under pressure from being swollen between the front and back closure of the stud.
Hope she feels better I had something similar happen to me a few months ago. I had my cartilage pierced back in October and in my second tri it decided to get all infected and I developed a keloid. I took out my studs put in hoops and put hydrogen peroxide on them. They got crusty but they are ok now.
    Good luck. Mobile smiley face.
  • I was a piercer for a few years. just use a saline solution. bactine will numb it a little bit also. don't use neosporine or any things like that. if it doesn't clear up in a few days I would put her on some antibiotics.

  • For the love of GOD do not use bactine or hydrogen peroxide or anything alcohol based! It slows healing tremendously and can irritate the skin worse. Ask any professional piercer. I have 18 ear piercings, I know how to handle an infection.

1/4 teaspoon sea salt to 1 cup warm water, turn her head to the side and hold the salt water mixture up to the ear so it soaks. Leave it like that for 510 minutes so that the skin and crust softens. Wash your hands and then gently pry the gunk off. Do this twice a day until its better.

As for the double backing, the softened skin from soaking may allow you to manipulate the skin to the point where you can get it out. The salt water soak should also relieve any swelling, which would make it harder to get that sucker out.

    Good luck!

This x 1000!!! I've had my fair share of piercings and never use anything but a saline solution. Anything else is risky and painful.
