No, it's not necessary. Dreft is full of chemicals and overpriced.
I've been using Charlie's Soap for all our laundry for a couple of years and love it as a natural option. I use it on cloth diapers too.
From regular stores, a free & clear variety would work well for babies. Sometimes something like Tide can cause rashes, but not usually if used with just clothes (as opposed to diapers).
Not only is it not necessary but it's a waste of money and probably not that good for baby anyway. Detergents like Dreft are full of chemicals and perfumes and it's really a shame that they market them for babies.
We use a free and clear detergent for all of our clothes, including the baby's things. I use Rockin Green for the cloth diapers and that is the only time we use a different detergent.
I just use/dTide. From what I understand, it's now as gentle as the baby stuff. Both my kids have very sensitive skin and neither has ever had a problem with their clothes/rashes.
Thank you for asking this question - as I had Dreft on my list of things to buy. Looks like I will trade the chemical latent laundry detergent for Tide or All.
Great thanks ladies! I just had it in the back of my mind that the baby detergent is just for marketing really.. We usually use something organic so I'm assuming that would be just as gentle. Glad I didn't go out and spend a bunch of money bulking up on that stuff.

you can use any "free and clear" type of detergent as well..as long as it has no perfumes or dyes
Tide's Free and Clear version was fine, too

This is what we did/will do as well. I think we mostly used Tide free and clear and it was just fine.
I make laundry soap, that will do just fine!
