NBR: wtf temp?

So my temp started training yesterday. She fell asleep during a meeting, yes it was a boring meeting but you just don't do that on your first day! Today as different people in my department have stopped by to discuss projects she has picked up her phone and started texting while I discussed things with them. WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. FLUCK?!!
I'm due aug 20th. I plan to work up until I go into labor but that could be at any point. Do I send her packing and try to find a new temp? Try to make it work? I am having serious doubts about her cspability to do my job though! Ahhhhh, this is added stress I do not need!!!!!

Re: NBR: wtf temp?

  • I'd send her packing. That's unacceptable in my book. The quicker you let her go, the quicker you can find and start training someone new. There are lots of people out there desperate for work - give the job to someone who actually wants it.

  • I would have a serious discussion with her about IF this is something she really wants to do. I'd put down the ground rules (i.e.- don't fall asleep (DUH), no phone except on breaks, etc.) and let her know they will be strictly enforced. The most important part is that you feel comfortable letting her stay and are confident in her ability to do the job. If your instincts say no, let her go. Maybe she has had some terrible thing happen in her life the past week or so (i.e- family member's death could explain her sleepiness and texting).. Never know though- she could just not have a work ethic. Definitely talk to her first!

I agree. I have to admit, I wouldn't even give her the courtesy to discuss any problems that she may be having that could cause her to be sleepy or text. If this was your first day, if there was a problem, you would have asked if it was okay to take a few texts because of xyz problem. This girl just doesn't seem responsible or seem to even care.

  • Get rid of her.  Does your company use a temp agency? and can they just send someone else tomorrow?

  • Get another temp in there asap, unless you want to return to a sh*t show!

  • Get rid of her asap and get a new temp.  If your company uses a temp agency let them know the reasons you are requesting a new temp (she's falling asleep on the job, texting, etc) and they will handle her.  Depending on what time it is there (how much of the work day is left, they might even be able send a new temp today.)

You do not want to come back from leave to a ton of undone work or worse work that has been done incorrectly.

  • I'd find someone new. That is ridiculous and unprofessional. There are plenty of people out of work that would be better.

This! Take care of it sooner rather than later so you have time to train and feel comfortable leaving your duties to a temp that won't fall asleep or text!
  • Uh yeah, buh bye. Bring in a new temp, post an ad on Craigslist... Whatever it takes! Anything sounds better than that. She's not being paid to keep your seat warm while you're out.

  • Wow. Totally unprofessional. Maybe you could have a say in the hiring phase next time if you do go w another temp.
