When to Call--esp. STMs

No, I'm not going to ask when to call.

I got a chuckle out of our appt today with one of the midwives in our practice (who happens to be the one who attended delivery of DD). Labor with DD was 10 hrs from first realizing I was in labor till DD arrived (an hour of pushing). We did Bradley method and arrived at hospital (an hour from our home) fully dilated. DH has been jokingly saying his biggest fear was I would deliver on the way this time. Well, today we found out our midwife is equally concerned. For all the rules of thumb (5-1-1, etc.) she said, "Yeah, um, so as soon as you think you're in labor, you need to call us." Not sure if that made DH feel better or worse :-)

Any other STMs have a fast enough labor before that you/SO/Ob/midwives are worried you might not make it to hospital? I think I'm less worried than DH--as I told him, if baby comes that quickly, it means probably no complications. But, yeah, still would be nice to be at the hospital. A friend did deliver DD #2 in her car (right as they arrived at hospital) and had to get an new passenger's seat put in the car!

Re: When to Call--esp. STMs

  • I am worried because our hospital is an hour away. I was induced last time so I am worried about going in to labor on my own and not making it in time.
No one else will ever know the strength of my love for you. After all, you are the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside.

I am a bit nervous, but my OB hasn't seemed too concerned. DD was born 25 minutes after getting to the hospital last time.

  • I'm nervous.
  • I give props to you moms who have a long drive to the hospital.  My ride was 5 minutes, and I thought I was going to die in the backseat on all fours trying to get through the 1-2 major contractions I had during that time.

Because our drive is so short, I haven't put much thought into when I'll call this time around, but I can imagine it's a much bigger piece of the puzzle when you're far away.

  • My situation is slightly different, but being pregnant with my third we were told to head to the hospital when contractions have been 10 minutes apart for one hour since moms of 3+ have a tendency to have quick labors.

  • FTM here, but my sister and DH (both second children) had similar stories of short labors and almost being born in the parking lot. Not sure if this is a common 2nd child thing or just a coincidence, but yeah, I'd be nervous for kid #2!!

  • My MW wants to know as soon as I start having ANY signs of labor so she can be ready to head to the birth center. Its a 5 min walk from my house but she lives in the next town over about an hour away so she wants as much notice as possible.

  • I am very concerned a well.... I went from 3to 8 cm in an hour with my first! I am not complaining about that in any way! but We are about 20 min away. My dr doesn't seem concerned so I guess I won't be worried yet. We have family about 30 minutes away so depending on what time of the day I go into labor, we may be taking our daughter with us to the hospital if family can't get to our house in time.
  • My 2nd came at 37 weeks with no warning and woke me up with contrax at 11:30p and I had delivered her by 1:30a. So 2 hours flat, total.

    So..yeah.. We get nervous.

My OB actually just offered an induction after 39 weeks due to my history of precipitous labor and since I am already 3cm/70%. I declined for now. I would really like her to come on her own.

But if I am 5cm of something crazy at next appt ... I may schedule just b/c I fear that is less and less time we have to get to the hospital and we have 3 kids we have to get someone to our house to watch before we can just run out the door. We will need at least a half hour from when we realize I am in labor till we are leaving the house, most likely. Hospital is only 10 min away, but still... We get nervous.

  • I was in labor with Cale for three hours from water break to him being there. I was in active labor with austin for an hour and twenty mintues. I am terrified to go into labor here at home. Cause I don't know how long I will go this time. My MW is worried about the same thing. I really hope I don't have this LO in my Durango I would hate to have to replace the leather seats in my car.

  • My OB and midwifes want to induce me at 39 weeks for a more controlled labor. My last labor was 2-3 hours and I lived 5 minutes from the hospital, this time the hospital is 30 minutes plus away and I have to arrange child care/ a ride to the hossy so yeah, we are all a bit concerned.
