No, I'm not going to ask when to call.
I got a chuckle out of our appt today with one of the midwives in our practice (who happens to be the one who attended delivery of DD). Labor with DD was 10 hrs from first realizing I was in labor till DD arrived (an hour of pushing). We did Bradley method and arrived at hospital (an hour from our home) fully dilated. DH has been jokingly saying his biggest fear was I would deliver on the way this time. Well, today we found out our midwife is equally concerned. For all the rules of thumb (5-1-1, etc.) she said, "Yeah, um, so as soon as you think you're in labor, you need to call us." Not sure if that made DH feel better or worse :-)
Any other STMs have a fast enough labor before that you/SO/Ob/midwives are worried you might not make it to hospital? I think I'm less worried than DH--as I told him, if baby comes that quickly, it means probably no complications. But, yeah, still would be nice to be at the hospital. A friend did deliver DD #2 in her car (right as they arrived at hospital) and had to get an new passenger's seat put in the car!
Re: When to Call--esp. STMs
I give props to you moms who have a long drive to the hospital. My ride was 5 minutes, and I thought I was going to die in the backseat on all fours trying to get through the 1-2 major contractions I had during that time.
Because our drive is so short, I haven't put much thought into when I'll call this time around, but I can imagine it's a much bigger piece of the puzzle when you're far away.

My 2nd came at 37 weeks with no warning and woke me up with contrax at 11:30p and I had delivered her by 1:30a. So 2 hours flat, total.
So..yeah.. We get nervous.
My OB actually just offered an induction after 39 weeks due to my history of precipitous labor and since I am already 3cm/70%. I declined for now. I would really like her to come on her own.
But if I am 5cm of something crazy at next appt ... I may schedule just b/c I fear that is less and less time we have to get to the hospital and we have 3 kids we have to get someone to our house to watch before we can just run out the door. We will need at least a half hour from when we realize I am in labor till we are leaving the house, most likely. Hospital is only 10 min away, but still... We get nervous.
