3rd Trimester

Is it safe to take Protein Supplements / Beef Liver Supplements?

I'm almost 35 weeks pregnant with my 3rd and am having a really hard time getting enough protein in my diet. Baby feels big or his position only enables me to eat really small meals and I'm having a really hard time getting the 70 grams of protein each day into my diet.

Does anyone know if it's safe to take Beef Liver pills while pregnant? I can't seem to find any info about it online.

One pill equals almost 10grams of protein. But again, I only want to take it if it's safe.

  • I'm having the same problem. I didn't want to risk taking any pills so I opted for protein bars that have 12 grams of protein. They aren't very big so I don't feel sick. I can't seem to eat much of anything right now....

  • It is much safer to try other natural ways to get protein like nuts and peanut butter. I would not take a supplement before talking to your doc.
  • It's very important to include proteins in your diet. My nutritionist told me to have 3:2 ratio of carb protein in each meal. And also you must include protein in snacks.

I like to take protein through food only...eggs, chicken, liver, lentils, soya beans, cottage cheese, nuts, cheese etc. are really good while pregnant.
  • There is noting with having several small meals each day, it is actually recommended for pregnant women because at about this time you run out of room to full your stomach.  I wouldn't even think about supplements unless my OB was concerned about my protein intake. Why take a pill? You're better off eating 10 handful of peanuts every day. Liver usually has high amounts of vitamin A which is not good for baby. HTH, and talk to your Dr.

  • What about protein powder?
  • I find organ supplements to be good for my diet, because I don't like eating them! They're so nourishing though. I'd only take a GRASS FED variety though personally.

Adding grass fed gelatin to your food or drinks can add protein as well.

There is nothing wrong with sources of vitamins that come from parts of animals - it's not synthetic. There is a significant difference and misunderstanding about getting too much of a vitamin like A from something that is synthetic (needs a lot of caution) to something that comes from a food source (use as needed).

  • Clif builder bars have 20 grams of protein. Also low fat greek yogurt is great too, it has about 15 grams and is quite light to eat.

I would advise extreme caution. Liver as very high amounts of vitamin A, and vit A is one of the ones you don't want to exceed a certain dose because it can be harmful. Excessively high vitamin A intake can cause serious birth defects. So I would double check with your doctor for sure before starting ANY supplements but especially liver supplements.

This- I thought liver was on the no eat list due to high amounts of Vitamin A.
