DS isn't leaking out of his diaper at night, but he does wake up with a red bottom. Currently, I'm using a disposable at night and not having this issue. However, any pockets that I've tried, including, adding inserts to them, ends up with him having a red bottom that usually goes away fairly quickly. I just don't know what to do. It seems to be just at night too. The same diapers are used during the day without problems (even when grandparents forget to change him). Any ideas would be appreciated. I really don't want to keep buying disposable diapers hen I have perfectly decent cloth diapers to use.
Re: Nighttime diaper problem
Do you have issues with Ammonia?
Try using Mighty Bubbles, RLR or Funk Rock
Also, consider using a hemp prefold... I find they are easier to get clean than our fitteds, which is our other nighttime system.
EDIT: Also, try to give him a short period of time diaper free (5 mins or so) in the morning if at all possible.
No issues with ammonia any other time, but in the am the diaper would have a stronger ammonia smell than any other diaper change. Does it matter what kind of fleece? I have a blanket I wouldn't mind cutting up if it fixed the problem.
P.S. I do slather him in DIY diaper cream coconut oil base at bedtime.
This. We had to switch to prefolds and a hemp doubler at night because no amount of stuffing in a pocket could withstand my super soaker. The downside is that even with a fleece liner, his bum gets a little pink from the wetness sometimes. I find that giving him some naked tummy time works wonders...and he loves it anyway!
It sounds like ammonia issues. Most people only notice it in the morning, as the baby would be in the diaper for a much longer period of time. When DD had ammonia issues it was always after the overnight diaper. They hold so much more pee. Her bum looked like it had a sunburn, which would lessen over the course of the day.
We use a hemp prefold layed on top of a cover most of the time now. Like I mentioned earlier, it cleans much easier.
FWIW, DD was allergic to coconut oil... but it does seem like ammonia.
