I have a 9 year old named Beau Harrison and He definitely looks like a Beau. No other name would have suited him better.
Go with the name you like the best. Everyone has an opinion on what you name your baby. When I told my FIL about the name I chose, He said.....Kids can be cruel. I guess meaning that when he got older kids would make fun of his name.......Never has is it happened! Everyone loves my Beau!
I do like Bo as a nickname. But I don't really like it as a standalone first name... It's too abrupt and too "country" for me. I'm not sure what first names could give you Bo as a nickname, though. PP mentioned Robert and I can see how that could work... a spinoff of Bob or Bobby I guess. Here are some names that begin with Bo that I found on a baby name site: Boden, Bowen, Boyd, Booker, Boris, Bodie, Boone. I like Bodie!
I have a Dutch last name so the spelling Bo is more appropriate than the French spelling Beau.
I really like the name Beau. It seems complete to me whereas Bo strikes me as a nn. I think that even with a dutch last name, Beau would look nice.
Beau Vanderland vs. Bo Vanderland or Beau Leeuwen vs. Bo Leeuwen
Now that I wrote it down I see that Beau and my last name look nice together because my last name has letters e,a and u in it.
I like Beau but would def. spell it this way. I think it definitely can stand alone but would pair it with a longer mn like Beau Harrison --- or Beau Everett etc..

So to answer your question, Bo can stand alone.

I'm not a big fan of Beau as a first name.

I went to high school with a Bo. I thought it stood alone fine. He was a very likeable guy and didn't have any problems with his name.
I do prefer the spelling Beau. I really like this name and have it on my long list.
I love the name Beau. Complete as a stand-alone, strikes me as very classic.
Boden is also a great name, then you can use NN Bodie or Bo
