Pregnant after IF

I ate Canadian Walleye - I'm freaking out

I love walleye and I never get to eat it. Since I've never seen it listed on high mercury fish lists, I thought lake fish was ok to consume. Well, a week after I enjoyed a 1/2 lb serving of fried walleye, I learned that it's a high mercury fish. What should I do? I'm worried sick.

Re: I ate Canadian Walleye - I'm freaking out

  • I would guess it is probably fine but you could call your OB if it will help you not to worry. The book I was just looking at said the chance of complications is small. When I get all freaked out about something I think back to when our parents were pregnant with us- they ate whatever, drank, smoked, etc. and most of us turned out fine!
Me:30 low AMH; DH:30 MFI (count, motility, morphology)

Thank you for your response I'm going to call my OB on Monday. I feel like I have to Google everything I do to make sure it's safe during pregnancy. This is crazy.

  • I agree.  I think it was such a small quantity.  If you start eating it every day then maybe I would worry.  Agreed.  Our mothers did way worse to us!  LOL!  My mom admitted her OB had her drink a half glass of wine to help her sleep!  I don't want to even think what her half glass looked like!

  • I'm no expert, but eating something like that just once shouldn't do much harm. I wouldn't start eating it every day or every week, but I think you are okay. Call your OB if you need reassurance! :)

I talked to a NP at my OBs office. You're right as long as it's not consumed regularly, baby should be ok.

  • I think that you are fine.  It was only once.  Think about everything that women do in the first few weeks of pregnancy when they don't know that they are pregnant.  And those are important weeks.  I think that your lo will be fine but call the dr because I know that I don't calm down until I hear the dr. say its ok.

  • I worry a lot about mercury exposure too, so I understand why you are so upset.

However, that being said, at this point there is nothing you can do about it, unfortunately.  It was a totally honest mistake, you shouldn't feel guilty about it.  All you can do is try to avoid high mercury fish in the future.  I try to keep the list from the FDA handy for reference.  I even had one in our car ;)

Anyway, I am sure that a one time exposure to 1/2 lb serving will not have a significant effect on your baby.  Remember there are women who eat high mercury fish throughout pregnancy without even realizing it, and I think their babies are probably fine!

  • I agree that you will be fine! I was telling my mom how I'm not really supposed to have lunchmeat, she told me when she was pregnant with me, she ate a hoagie just about everyday! Lol and it definitely was NOT heated up!
