Ladies with blocked tubes - question.

I noticed that a lot of you with blocked tubes had them removed. My left tube is blocked, right is open. My acupuncturist thinks this may be why my first IVF was a BFN.  I don't have hydrosalpinx so I'm not sure if this is why. WTF appt next week.  So my question is - why did you get your tubes removed?

Thanks ladies!

Three ectopic preganacies in left tube in 1999, 2003 and 2004. HSG in 2010 concluded left tube blockage. IUI with femara in 2012 BFN. IVF #1 June 2013, 20 retreived, 14 mature, 12 fertilized via ICSI, one transferred, four frozen, BFN.  FET in September 2013 - BFN:( FET #2 April 2014 - BFP!!!!

Re: Ladies with blocked tubes - question.

  • So sorry you are going through this!
I got mine removed because they were both blocked, and RE said if I were to keep them, and do IVF, the risk of fluid spilling into the uterus could be very harmful to the embryo.

She also said the tubes have hair-like follicles on them, and even if they put the embryo right into the uterus, those follicles could try and grab the embryo and pull them into the tubes, causing an ectopic pregnancy.

This was absolutely, without a doubt the hardest decision my DH and I have ever had to make. I have had to have therapy, and spent a lot of time in prayer grieving the loss of not ever conceiving naturally.

  • If you do not have a hydro, you may not need to have the tube removed. Have you ever had a hysteroscopy to see what the uterus looks like? I have a blocked and a partially blocked tube, no hydro, and normal physiology otherwise so we kept the tubes. My RE didn't think that it is a factor in any of my losses or failed cycles.

  • thanks for your reply. No, I haven't had hysteroscopy. Just a HSG and saline sonogram - would that tell what the uterus looks like? I don't think my tube was a factor either. The fact of the matter IVF isn't 100%.  So I am looking forward to my FET. I have four embies! Good luck to you!

With a hysteroscopy they use a camera and can actually see inside, not like a saline sono or HSG were it uses ultrasound and Xray views. Honestly, if your RE isn't concerned about it and does not consider it a factor, your failed cycle could very well be just bad luck. I hate to use that rational, but sometimes it just doesn't work, KWIM?

  • I actually had both tubes removed today due to Hydro. I completely agree with PP that it was an awful decision to make, lots of tears were shed at the hospital today but ultimately I know it's for the best given the situation. It took a couple of failed cycles and a second opinion for me to agree to the surgery. Hopefully now it'll be a clean slate for us.

I wish you lots of luck in your journey!

Same here! Left is blocked, right open but not functioning properly. No hydro. We tried naturally for years, then i had to accept that IVF was the only route. Good luck to you honey.
