Prayer for family... and ?

Hey ladies! A couple of weeks ago I posted a t and p request for my family regarding my aunt who is sick.
Well, she hasn't gotten any better, to the point that the doctors are telling us to get prepared for the worst. So i will be traveling to Chicago on Monday to be with my family. Please keep my family in your prayers.

My question is this. I have never traveled on an airplane while pregnant. I will be 14 weeks 6 days when i leave. Do I have to let my doctor know and get an ok from her before travel. I have only met with her twice and we didn't discuss travel as i didn't think i would be doing any plane travel. My last appointment was July 3rd and i won't have another until August 5th. I haven't had any complications other than severe morning sickness which i take zofran for. Thanks for your opinions and prayers!

  • I'm so sorry about your aunt - you guys are in my thoughts.

I flew at 18 weeks with my last pregnancy, and I didn't need doctor's approval. I was told I'd only need approval if I was flying after 30 weeks or something like that [I don't quite remember the weeks]. I would think you'd be OK flying without letting your OB know.

  • I'm sorry about your aunt. T&P headed your way!  I don't think you have to call your doctor about your plane trip. You can call just to make sure, but I think you'll be ok. I flew to Jamaica at 8 weeks and my doctor said that was fine. I did take a phenergan for my morning sickness about 30 minutes before takeoff.

  • You shouldn't need approval in your first trimester but if it will make you feel better, you're always allowed to call! :) It's usually the airlines who care late in your 3rd tri because they don't want the liability of having you go into labor during the flight. I flew a lot during my first pregnancy, the last time being at 30 weeks and my doc never had a problem.

I'm so very sorry about your aunt and your family will be in my prayers this week. :(

You really don't need OB's ok for travel this early in the game but you can always call if you are not sure.

  • My sympathies. My only advice is not to go through the new scanners at security and ask to go the old metal detectors. They may do an additional pat down, but no big deal. We have the scanners at both Midway and OHare.

Sending prayers to your aunt and family.

I've flown a bunch during my first and second trimesters. You do not have to call your doctor unless you have any concerns. My advice would be to drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. Hugs.

This, just let them know you are pregnant and would like to decline the scanners.  it honestly should be no big deal.

I'm so sorry about your aunt.

  • So sorry about your aunt, I don't think you need the ok from dr until after 30 weeks. You can always call the nurse and ask tho.

  • Your OB doesn't need to be consulted on travel until you are around 30-34 weeks. Doc's have varying rules. Like mine says no travel 6 weeks out. But at this stage you are fine.
  • Thanks to everyone for your prayers and support. I did call the doc just in case. Waiting to hear back from her. Wish i was traveling for different reasons, but i guess that's life.
