Heartburn starting in 2nd Tri?

Just curious if anyone else has just now started experiencing heartburn. I'm 12 weeks, and took my first Tums tonight. I'm asking because I have an OB appt next week, and thinking if I should go ahead and get a heartburn med prescription or just stick with Tums, since I haven't experienced it much yet. I don't want to take an unnecessary pill, but if it starts coming on strong, I don't want to be miserable for 3 extra weeks until my next appt.

My co worker is in her third trimester and has bad heartburn, she tried tums and that didn't work for her so I told her to try milk. I read that milk helps and she hasn't had any since. Good luck

I'm 12 weeks, and mine started just a few days ago.  I had preexisting severe chronic heartburn, so already on meds, so this is what the meds can't control, lucky me.

Fortunately, there are a LOT of category B options!  Just be aware with the PPIs, about 40% of people have a hard time discontinuing them, since they get worse symptoms than before for several weeks after quitting.

Definitely, experiment with your diet.  Sit/stand up straight after you eat.  Mention it to your OB and see what she has to say.

  • I am glad you brought this up because I spent all day yesterday fighting heartburn!  I don't usually get heartburn, just very randomly, so I was a little concerned that it wouldn't go away.  Tums seemed to help but only temporary.  This will be something I bring up at my next appointment but I also plan to continue with Tums until it becomes intolerable.

Old wives tale:if you have constant heartburn during your pregnancy, baby will have a full head of hair at birth.  Worked for my sister... we'll see :)

So, one of my favorite foods is spaghetti bolognese, which is tomato based.  At 9 weeks I was enjoying my favorite dinner, but by the time I got to bed, I wanted to die! My best friend, who is a hospitalist, was here, so she pulled out her medical tools and found that a 10mg tablet of Pepcid ac twice a day would be perfectly safe and might help with the nausea too. OB agreed.  In fact, I have only needed one, about one hour before dinner and it keeps me happy for 24 hours.  I am trying to avoid too many pills and things, but I took the one tablet for several days and I was soo much more comfortable.  Then when I forgot about it for a few days, I was actually fine.  I don't necessarily say take the pills! But take the pills! Tums didn't do it for me.
