ParaGard

Late to the party, I have used a diaphragm up until now when I found out the hard way that I am allergic to spermicide. So who has one? Do you think it was worth it? We are planning on having more children within 23 years. Did your insurance pay for it? Were you worried about the extra copper in your body?

also I am not worried about the copper my H thinks I will die a slow death of copper posioning...

Re: ParaGard

  • I have one!  I just had it in a month ago b/c my insurance cycle is April 1-March 31, so for it to be covered, I had to wait until it started over this year.  But it's covered 100% (and I think it has to be across the board b/c of "Obamacare").  We're DONE w/ 2, but neither of us wanted to undergo surgery, no matter how minor.  I wanted the hormone-free option, just b/c I always felt "off" while on BCP after having DD.  I debated the Mirena vs. Paragard, and didn't even consider the copper in my body aspect, TBH.  I just didn't want to think about BC anymore!

I'm on my 1st period since having it in, and yes, it's a lot heavier and longer than before, and the cramps were worse than normal, but overall it hasn't been bad.  I attribute it to the fact that it's the 1st one, but even if they were all this "bad", I'd still be glad that I got it.

  • Hi, used to be an active poster and only recently have come back to lurking!

I had the paragard placed at my 6 week check up. It was covered by my insurance. I had it taken out three months later. It was uncomfortable for me. I couldn't exercise, etc. without feeling crampy. My OB said it was placed correctly, but I still chose to have it removed.

My BFF has had one placed for two years now and has had no problems!

  • I have one, this is my second. I had the first one placed in 2007, removed in 2011 and was pregnant with DS within a week. I had the second placed this past March. We're most likely one-and-done so when this one expires, DH will get snipped as he'll be 50.

I had a horrid time with hormonal birth control after I turned 30 so this was the perfect solution for me. I absolutely think it's worth it. My BFF has one as well and couldn't be happier. My periods are heavy but they're short, like hemorrhage for 2 days then spotting. I was on HBC for so long I can't really remember what my "real" period was like anyway.

My insurance covered it minus a $50 copay.

I didn't really consider the extra copper issue but haven't seen any effects.
