3rd Trimester

BTDT gbs

How long were you in the hospital after delivery with gbs?

Found out I'm positive this time and googled some crap and noticed it's possible to be held longer in the hospital. I'd like to get back home ASAP after delivery. I have a 1.5 year old and care for another little boy.

Also, some mentioned the medication burns?

Re: BTDT gbs

  • I was gbs positive for my DS. They gave me the two rounds of antibiotics in my IV during labor, but I don't think anything further, or extra time. I was there the 2 nights, anyway, not for that reason.

I asked the MW about it I haven't been tested yet. Because I hope to stay home till the last hours of labor. If I am positive, she'd like me there 4 hrs so they can do both rounds. But she acknowledges some labors go super fast and it's just not possible. In which case they'd watch the baby that much closer and probably keep us an extra day.

Not sure if that helps, just what's in my experience. GL!

  • I was GBS+ with J. That being said, we have HB. So I have no idea how long a hospital would keep you.

I also declined antibiotics. (Disclaimer: DH and I did tons of research and talked to my MW. After lots of reading and discussion, we decided that it's nuts - in our opinion- to treat all GBS+ women with antibiotics considering that problems are rare and the general overprescription of antibiotics in our society. My MW was fine with no antibiotics under certain conditions: no prolonged rupture of membranes, no fever in labor, etc...)

A hospital may want to keep you longer to look for signs of infection in baby. That's just my guess though.

  • I was GBS+ with DS and was in the hospital for just about 36 hours from the time we were admitted to when we went home. I had some antibiodics in my IV and that was that. No complications.

  • I was there for 48 hours. The baby had to be monitored for the full 48 hours.

  • I had it with both of mine and they like to keep you 48 hours after delivery.

So DS2 was born at 4 50 pm on a Tuesday and we were discharged at 3 pm Thursday. Sucked but I'm glad they watch it carefully. With antibiotics [they can give the baby some after delivery if you delivery fast] you very rarely have any problems!

  • I was GBS positive with both my last two babies. I declined antibiotics, and both times baby was fine. They wanted the babies to stay for 48 hours just to watch and make sure that no symptoms started, and of course I stayed with them. But they never said anything about my staying being mandatory. I honestly think gbs is given more credence than it should. I believe we are equipped to deal with these things on our own, although that isn't to say that everyone should decline antibiotics, because not everyone can fight it off.
  • Thanks ladies.

I guess I will plan for the full 48 hours.

  • I had a 48 hour stay, but I also did not have any antibiotics because my labor was fast and there was no time for them.

  •  I received an entire dose of antibiotics prior to delivery and was discharged under 48 hours after DD's arrival.
