What ingredients to avoid in tea?

Mobile: what ingredients to avoid in tea?
Hello ladies, I remember seein somewhere that there are certain ingredients in tea that I should avoid, is that true? An was hibiscus one of them? I just looked through all of my teas and the first or second ingredient in them is hibiscus, yikes.
Also, is there a list somewhere of things to avoid in teas while you're expecting?
TIA!

  • I hadn't heard of this but I don't really drink herbal tea. Baby Center has a list.

I would check with your OB. Baby Center is cautioning on ginger tea but my doc recommended it... All in moderation, perhaps?

  • I've seen Chamomile as a no-no, but I've also read lots of info that in MOST cases, 1-2 cups a day isn't going to deliver the amount of an ingredient needed to be concerned, assuming you're drinking the standard teas and not the ones with super concentrated amounts.  As with anything, a call to your OB would be best if you are concerned.

  • Thank you all! Yeah I have an appointment with my OB tomorrow so I was just going to ask her then, but I figured I'd ask on here since many of you are full of information.

My OB said to stay away from the teas with Licorice root extract. I don't know any other specifics.

  • I am a tea drinker, and I really like the Yogi teas, since they have a warning on the box for pregnant woman. Basically, you can drink raspberry tea or mint tea. There are also some pregnancy teas out there, BrU has some that I like.

I think you also need to avoid rooibus,  st. john's wart and a few others.

  • I just asked my Dr this same question... She said that there isn't enough studies to prove anything about herbal teas and supplements. She just told me it would be better to err on the side of caution and keep it to a minimum. I had whooping cough for the first 6 weeks and drank four herbal teas a day... I'm pretty sure that it doesn't cause miscarriages like google says hibiscus does. I had no idea at that time or I wouldn't have... But since me and baby are fine, I guess it's ok.
