Hey ladies, I am due Oct 12, and have not started my nursery at all yet oops. 2 different people are throwing me baby showers, one is August 3rd, and the other is on Sep 14th. I know, the second one is super late, but its my MIL, and I just agreed to it because I know she is excited about it and can't do earlier. Anyway, with Target having their baby sale, and my own lack of patience, I'm wondering if I should just buy my own stuff that I absolutely need, like a crib, car seat, etc. And then if I get any of the things I have already bought at the showers, I will just return one of them. What do you think? I just don't want to wait until mid September to get last minute must need items, plus I'll be huge and I doubt I'll have the motivation to put it all together. Ugh..i wish my showers were earlier...oh well!
Re: what to do?
i have the same due date and haven't started our nursery either. we have a whole trimester left!
easy peasy.... right?
furniture i personally wouldnt register for and expect as a gift anyway, unless someone has already said they want to get it as a big gift, and even then i doubt i'd register for it. i'd go ahead and get it and register for a car seat. if you get a duplicate, yeah, just return it or use it in your SO's car. there's isn't much to do besides take it out of the box and install it (and have it checked if you want), same with a pack-and-play, activity mat, etc.
maybe see what happens at your august shower and reassess after that? since that's still two months out?
Great point! I put the stuff I already bought on my registry and then made sure to take them off once I purchased them.
I would definitely purchase your big ticket items yourself such as the carseat, crib and any other items you want. Then see what gifts you get at your baby shower. Just be sure to take anything on your registry that you purchase off either at checkout or online before you go make the purchase.
We're superstitious so when DD was born all we had was a car seat and a registry. We took a bunch of diapers home from the hospital with us and DH spent a good amount of time in Buy Buy Baby and Target the first week. People sent us gifts over the first few weeks and we set things up as we got them and bought whatever we needed. You can live without most things for a while.
A friend of mine bought tons of newborn clothes for her baby who was born at almost 12 pounds. She had taken off tags and washed everything so she couldn't return or exchange anything.
All that to say, if you only get things in August and don't have everything set up, you still have time and you can do things once the baby is born.
I have no idea when my shower will be, which kind of makes me nervous. Anyway, we really wanted the Britax B-Ready stroller/infant seat combo, and they had a great June promo where you buy the stroller you get the infant seat/dock for free. We couldn't pass it up because we literally were saving about $150+ if we went ahead and did it. I couldn't see having someone else pay that much money (if they even would) when they didn't have to. We also just purchased our crib and matching dresser from Target since we really liked the one that is on sale this week. We wouldn't have registered for this anyway, and no one has mentioned they'd want to purchase this for us so again, we went ahead and got it.
As for the other "little" stuff, we're trying our best to see what we get at showers. I did mention to my mom that several of the things we registered for are on sale this week, but I don't even think they've started planning my shower so it's probably too early for anyone to take advantage.
