I'm not working in the city anymore, but I did throughout my pregnancy with DD1. No one ever gave up a seat for me. Ever. I swear at 38 weeks pregnant, I still held more doors for other people than anyone held for me. Totally oblivious.

  • I don't live in NYC, but I do live in a big city (Chicago). Never had anyone give up a seat for me either. With my first pregnancy, I had to take my cat to an emergency vet visit and it just happened to coincide with rush hour. So here I am 36 weeks pregnant on a super crowded bus holding on for dear life to a rail with one hand and holding a cat carrier with the other. Got pushed and shoved a lot, but no seat. No one would make eye contact. I was hoping the bus driver would say something on my half...nope! He was too busy trying to stay on schedule and driving like a mad man.

  • I guess I've been lucky.  I'd say 25% of the time I just get a seat on my own immediately (I get on the train in Brooklyn) and 50% of the time someone actually gives me their seat.   Leaving about 25% of the time where I don't get a seat given to me...but often get one by the time I'm halfway home.   I've also had people who were also standing tell the people that were sitting that someone needs to get up and give me a seat.    That's a little awkward for me, but nice.

I'd say once 3rd tri hit this was the norm.    Though now that's it's been 90 degrees I've noticed people have been getting up for me a little bit less...even though I'm HUGE and 38.5 weeks pregnant.

Staring next week I'm working form home until baby comes....thank god!

  • I've only had to ride a few times as I've gotten big thankfully, but each time someone in the car has offered. I was only going a few stops so it didn't matter much, but it was very nice. I've also had people pretty much shove me out of the way to the seat I was headed in so they could get there first.

  • Hi all, just moved into 3rd tri this week and ride subway every day. It has been so interesting who is kind and who isn't. I've had so many older women offer me a seat, but 20 year olds basically take me down to take the seat I'm heading for. I think I've been lucky, closer to my hood in Brooklyn people are we more likely to offer then when I head back home from grand central.

My friend and I joke about starting a shaming site and take photos of the people that obviously see our bellies and ignore them, ha!
  • we moved from NY, and was recently there visiting. On the subway no one gave me there seat for 45 minutes. I contemplated sitting on the floor i was so hot/tired/in pain. after i transferred to another train someone got up but it was only 2 stops but still nice. I was really shocked no one even offered.

  • I'm not in NYC but occasionally ride the metro in DC and have the same issues.  It's amazing how selfish people are.  On a packed car, no one will get up and offer a seat so my poor belly is always getting whacked and bumped into.  Thankfully it's not something I have to do that often.

  • When I was pregnant with my first and taking the train into Boston for work, I would get offered a seat occasionally. 90 percent of the time, it was a woman offering. Funny thing, I remember being offered a seat on more than one occasion by elderly women and once by an extremely obese woman. I had a complicated first pregnancy, so I always took the seat and was very grateful.

  • Ladies over the age of 60 are the only people who have ever offered me a sear. Seriously. Once guy actually told me that he didn't feel bad about sitting while I stood because women were the ones "who wanted feminism in the first place."

  • I work in midtown but come in from jersey. I don't ride the subway anymore because of my crazy fears but I will tell you no one gives up their seat for a ph woman on the local buses either! In fact this woman with her 5 kids ages 6ish to 15ish just sat there looking at me and didn't even tell one if her older kids to get up and for that matter neither did the two 20 something year olds get up. A man who was probably around 75 wanted to give me his seat!

  • If it helps I always gave up my seat!  Anyone over 60, pregnant women, women holding babies, and anyone who seemed like they needed a place to sit more than I did.  I was a nanny so I often had the 1.5 year old with me and it was about 50/50 back then whether someone would get up for us, not that we really needed it but the gesture was so kind.  And yes, it was always a woman and always someone older.  One or two gentlemen were still there back then but that was rare.

This was also a decade ago.  I'm sure it's only gotten worse.

I'm 39 weeks and I almost always have people offer their seat to me...I've been pleasantly surprised at how nice people have been for the past several weeks.
  • I take the express bus and have only been in the situation of needing a seat twice one time someone gave one up to me and the other time all the people around me pretended to be sleeping. I have been lucky as far as the subways go and only red them during off peak times and always get a seat.

  • I'm offered a west more often than not, but yes, it's almost always a woman. The other day a lady rushed past me for a seat I was clearly heading towards. Another younger girl offered me her seat. Someone across from me made eye contact and said I should have beat the woman up who took the other west because "thats f ed up." It was kind of humorous.

  • I've been lucky so far - ever since i hit about 25-26 weeks and started really showing, i've been offered a seat 9/10 times either on the Path or the Subway. Almost always by a man. If it's too short of a distance i usually politely decline but the heavier i've been getting the more i take the seat and say thank you. I was actually pleasantly surprised.
