What to do with old/expired car seat?

The Graco Snugride DD is in is from when DS was a baby so it's coming up on it's 5 year expiration (I think that's how long they last, no?).   She'll be moving to a convertible soon anyway but what do I do with the 2 snugrides and 3 bases I have?  Just toss them?

I hate just throwing out big things like that assuming they'll just sit in a landfill somewhere.

Make sure you cut the straps and tear up the fabric so someone will not be tempted to reuse it. If your bases are expired as well, I would use paint or bold marker to put Expired on it very large on all sides.

Our recycling company takes some pretty bizarre stuff--I'd call to see if they'll take a car seat.  It is just plastic and metal, after all--they may be able to pick it up!  I also hate the idea of a carseat sitting in a landfill just because it's (kinda arbitrarily) "expired"--like it's sour milk or something, lol!

This! And if you don't need to coupon maybe find someone at the store who could use it. BRU sends them back to the manufacturer to be destroyed so there is no risk of someone using it after the expiration. So it keeps it from sitting in a landfill and you ca help someone or get a coupon to use yourself!

If you trade it in at BRU, doesn't that also eventually end up in a landfill?

If the plastic shell is marked with a number for recycling, you could see if your town would take it with the recycling (with all the fabric and straps removed). Otherwise, it is trash and it should go to the landfill.
