3rd Trimester

labor induction

Hi Ladies

I scheduled my induction for Saturday 7/13 if baby girl doesn't come before then.   I spoke with my doctor about the process and was wondering more of what to expect from the patient standpoint.   Anyone been induced?  How did it go?

TIA!

Re: labor induction

  • They bring you in and hook you up. If I remember correctly there is paperwork and such as well. You will get an IV and then whatever subsequent drug they are using to induce. For me it was pitocin. From there it is a waiting game.

This. Everyone will have a different experience but for me it wasnt a bad one. They started the pitocin drip at 730am and I had DD at 430pm that day and DS at 444pm the same day of his induction.

  • Is this your first?

Do you know your Bishops Score (or your stats with regard to dilation/effacement)?

I was induced with my 3rd.

I came in. Filled out paperwork. They did a quick u/s to make sure baby was head down. About an hour after I got there I was hooked up to an IV and they started pitocin (they skipped the cervadil/folely bulb with me b/c I was already 3cm).

My labor started going fast. However, I stalled at 7cm for about an hour or more. Turns out baby was indeed head down but was sunnyside up. A nurse finally did a counterpressure massage on my lower back to help with the back labor (I did not get an epi) and either the massage itself or the movement of me sitting up for it and then laying back down after prompted baby to turn. After that - I had the baby out in less than 2 minutes flat. Last check I had still been at 7cm. The nurse had just left the room and then the first contraction I had after that massage DH said he could tell something was different. I told him I felt pressure. Baby girl literally delivered herself. There was no doc in the room and her head was out before the nurses got in there.

It was pretty cool actually. :)

I thik check in to delivery was 4 hours and that would have been much quicker if not for the stalling due to her position.

  • I was induced with last pg. My midwife started out with cervidil, a cervical ripener. I've had friends who were given cytotec for induction, but that drug is not FDA approved for induction. So I refused it. Both are used to soften cervix with hope that labor will start on its own. if that doesn't work then the next step is pitocin. Some will just skip straight to the pitocin since that will start labor for sure. I personally HATE pitocin. It makes your contractions stronger and more painful. And you're hooked up to the IV drip, which makes my feet swell really bad. But everybody has different reaction to pitocin.
  • Thanks ladies this is really helpful! I know everyone is different, but it's nice to hear success stories as my brain naturally moves to the worse case scenario.  The dr checked today and I am 50% effaced and a 'fingertip' dilated.   We will see, maybe she will come on her own before Saturday.

  • I went in the night before and they started me on a "low dose" instead of using cervidel. I was 50% effaced and 2 cm and when I woke up (felt no contractions at that point) I was 80% and a 4... they upped my dose around 7AM (and they keep upping it though out the day), I breathed and stood through contractions next to my bed until I decided to get epi.... pushed for 45 min and delivered same day at 3pm. It was a great experience. If I don't deliver by my EDD I will hope to be induced again. Congrats on your scheduled date!!
  • I was induced with my first two sons. Both times, I checked in hospital early in the morning. Around 9am, I was given cervidil. My first time around, I naively thought it was a oral pill. Boy was I shocked when the doctor placed it inside me. Around noon, I had my water broken, epidural and for first induction they started the pitocin. For my second, the cervidil kick started the labor. My first son was born around 10pm. My second son was born around 6pm. Overall my experience with induction has been very positive. Good luck with your induction!
  • My friend was induced last Monday at 41 weeks. They gave her pitocin at 4am (yes, 4am!). She got the epidural shortly after. By 1pm she was pushing - but baby was turned slightly to the right. After 3 hours of pushing and the Dr. trying to manually move the baby into position, they had to do an emergency c-section. Everyone is doing well though!
  • I was induced with my first at 37 weeks due to pre e. I checked in at noon They placed cervical pill at three. I slept all night and received pitocin at 6 am. She was delivered at 4:15 pm with a few pushes. I was not dialated at all whe I started the process. All went well

  • I got induced a few days before my EDD with Chloe. Overall, good experience. I checked in at 6 pm on Sunday night, a midwife broke my water, I was already 3 cm at the time. I got pitocin a few hours later, then my epidural, then started pushing around 9 am. I was happy with my induction. Just think positive thoughts, everything will be fine

  • I was induced. It really wasn't a problem. I went in at 7:00am, filled out paperwork. The nurse put in my iv and set up the monitors to keep an eye on the baby. I was already pretty dilated (4cm), but having no contractions so they broke my water to see if that would send me into labor on its own. That didn't work, so they started the Pitocin an hour later hey just slowly upped the dosage until I got regular contractions. I didn't get any regular contractions until around 1:00pm. I had my daughter at 7:40pm.

I had a really good experience with the induction! Wish you all the best! don't be afraid!  You can do it!

  • Hi there, I was induced at 40w6d with kiddo #1.  I was 2cm/50% for weeks before that so they did not need cervidil or anything.  I went in at 5am, and changing into the gown, got settled and they started the pitocin at about 6am.

DH and I basically hung out, i could get up and move around with my IV pole.  They had the portable monitors on my but it kept slipping. I think abound 10 they broke my water - and that got the contractions started!! They gave me Nubain so I could sleep a bit, but not much at all.  I was pretty comfortable, dealing with the contractions well. Right after lunch I was 4cm and got the epi so I could try to take a nap. After my nap I had progressed to 9, I sat up, a few hours went by of repositioning and I started pushing at 7:05 and he was born at 7:11 9with forceps due to him being angled).

Pretty easy, comfortable.   I was scared of a Csection and all the rumors I heard, but it was pretty drama-free.

I am kinda hoping this one comes on it's own, though. :)
