summer sickness & croup

Gah. I've been up all night with E. He woke up yesterday morning with a little cough here and there and by last night it sounded really croup-y. At 1:15 a.m. we were in the bathroom running a steam shower and giving him Motrin. By 4, he was in our bed and still had a fever of 101. Poor kid. I hate when he's sick-it's such a helpless feeling.

  • I'm sorry to hear, Eastie. We are right there with you. Was in the ER a better part of the night with Mason last night. He also has croup. Something I learned for croup from the ER doctor. DON'T do the steam showers, when it's croup, it actually does the opposite of what you intend. Do a cool mist humidifier instead. They said kids who get croup in the summer are the unlucky ones. The winter croup victims can go out in the cold air and ironically it dramatically helps. Also, use ibuprofen as it decreases the inflammation in the airway with the anti inflammatory. Also, Mason's got bad enough that they gave him a steroid and he sounds incredibly better this morning. Something to think about if your LO isn't improving. Good luck, sorry to have another mommy of croup on the boards today!

  • Oh no! Poor E Sad Connor has had croup before. Luckily, for us, it was only bad for about 2, maybe 3 nights, then it broke up and was just a normal cough. I hope his is the same.

    Good luck hun.

  • What does a croup cough sound like?  DS has been sick and had a dry cough that seems to be turning into a wet cough.

  • MommaP, it sounds a little like a seal barking. I guess that's what I think it sounds like anyway.

Oy, I hope Mason feels better! We've had it before, once this past winter, in February. We still have his neb treatment kit from it and were thinking of using it, but I think I'll check in with his Dr first. Weird that they told us to alternate between the shower and the cool mist moisturizer ?

A girl I work with just told me the same thing about the shower and cool mist... I swear I always heard that with the shower, but the ER doc said it just doesn't work with croup. I think I'll be lucky enough to avoid it either way because the steroid they gave Mason last night seemed to really do the trick. He woke up sounding amazing this morning. I hope your little guy starts feeling better soon!

Just came back from the Dr. He gave Ethan the steroid shot and he has an ear infection. His Dr. said most kids don't get croup in the summer!

Glad to hear Ethan got a steroid. He'll be feeling better in no time. Sad he has an ear infection on top of the croup. Crap luck for the little fella...and his mom!
