Bumper pads???

I am reading now you shouldn't use these?!??? Is this true?

Re: Bumper pads???

  • They are illegal in Illinois bc they are a suffocation hazard when the baby starts rolling.

I am planning on getting breathable ones from Amazon, if any at all.

  • There is no full consensus but arguments are that as pp said they are a suffocation risk when baby is mobile and they impede airflow possibly contributing to sids before that. There are no conclusive statistics either way but I chose to use mesh breathable ones instead.

  • We used the breathable ones with DD.  We didn't put them in her crib until about 6 months though, because that was when she really started moving around in there.

  • Here's an article about keeping bumpers out of the crib: https://www.cnn.com/2011/10/18/health/no-bumpers-cribs-sids-parenting/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

We didn't use any for our son and he was just fine.

  • Never used them for dd and never had an issue. They are adorable but completely not worth the risk. I would not get them

  • We didn't use a bumper as it was just one more worry during the scary newborn phase.

  • After having a baby and having watched other babies, I would personally never put bumpers on a crib for any baby not yet crawling. Which means 7 months for some, 9 months for mine. I have seen a little baby I watch get stuck up against the crib side, and thank goodness she didn't have bumpers. It was naptime so she was stuck for 5ish min before I realized. She was 6 months old, and can lift her head up great, but was on her belly struggling at the corner of the crib. I also am strict about the no blanket rule. I've seen that same baby squirm out of her swaddle then end up with it loosely wrapped around her neck. But it could have become tighter with her squirming or rotating more. I say once they can squirm around like that, no more swaddle or blankets. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Only the wearable zip up blankets.

  • It was a risk not worth taking in my opinion. We used breathable bumpers. I was really excited to see more color options in the breathable bumpers recently as well. That being said, buying a crib bedding set ended up being a huge waste of money. We don't use the quilt or the bumpers. So for 150, we got a sheet, a skirt and window valance. I will not buy one again.

  • I got them b/c they came with our set with #1 and #2. I used them until they both started moving around the crib, then I put on the breathable bumpers. They're fantastic.  I never made a room for baby #3 (poor kid... but we're selling our house now so... long story.)  Anyway, he's in DD's crib with the breathable bumper from the start.

  • We didn't use them with DS, he's a year old (almost) and he's gotten his leg stuck once. So I won't use them with the next baby either.

  • I have regular bumpers on DS's crib and have had them on since birth. He's also pretty much always had a blanket [although come to think of it we mught have started that later]. He's been fine so far. I worry about him getting a leg or arm stuck, so they'll stay on. He squirms a ton when he sleeps. For this one though, I think I might opt for a breathable bumper. There are a ton more color and pattern options now.

    same here

  • We opted out of the regular and breathable bumpers. It isn't only a suffication risk but the strings can pose a strangulation risk. DD has never gotten stuck in her crib. That could be because she used to be a mega-chunker though lol

We won't be using either for this LO too.

  • When I had my daughter ten years ago, I *gasp* had bumpers on her crib. That was before the recommendation no no. She never had any issues with them. However, I could probably count on both hands how many times she slept in her crib. I liked my snuggle buddy :)

  • In addition to suffocation, strangulation is also a concern. We never used them and never really needed to.

  • I am a minimalist, and don't like the way they look anyways.  I think they are gaudy.  So DS did fine with out his.  Like others have said, I have heard great things about breathable bumpers.  So if you go for one, I would do that.
