lost baby tooth

my son is 4 and he lost his first baby tooth yesterday. my step son hit him in the month with a body board in the pool. and he came really loose and durning the night he said he wiggled it and it came out and then he lost it out side in grass(last night was our planned camping out night in the back yard. I am wondering if this is normal to be so young to have this happen?

Re: lost baby tooth

  • I think 4 is a little young but I teach PreK and have at least one kid each year lose their first tooth. It's not unheard of.

  • I also teach preschool and I have two students who have lost several teeth this year.  It's early but not unreasonable.

  • Because it was from trauma I would call your dentist. They may want to see him to rule out any other injury to the gums or other teeth.

  • I know you said that he lost the tooth but did you ever see it? Because it is possible to still have a root fragment in there and only the part of the tooth you can see have fallen out if it was from trauma. Ditto to PP who said to call a dentist to be safe.

Your circumstance is different because it was due to trauma, but I have had a three year old patient who had naturally lost 4 teeth. Some kids are just ahead. Your DS probably would have lost that tooth in the next year or so anyway.
