A friend of mine has PE and had her baby delivered today :(

She was only 5 months along and had blood pressure issues as it is. She went into the hospital a few days ago and they determined that she has pre-eclampsia and after trying everything they could, her bp wouldn't stop rising. It was pretty high, they said 220/something and it was too dangerous to let her continue any longer, that her liver AND kidneys were also shutting down, so they told her that they needed to deliver the baby by emergency c-section. She was 22 weeks and the littlest baby they ever delivered and did life saving efforts on was 22.6 weeks so they would not perform life saving efforts. This is her second baby she has lost and my heart is just breaking for her. Some t's & p's sent her way would be awesome! She really needs them right now.

Im sorry to hear this and my thoughts are with your friend and her family.. also forgive my ignorance but why wouldn't they perform life supporting actions on the baby at 22 weeks?

That's not preeclampsia. That's full on. That's scary stuff for her. It happened to me with bp of 250 over 200 and a big eclamptic seizure. Thoughts and prayers for her. That takes a huge toll on your body. She is not only going to be grieving for her little one but she is going to feel awful physically for quite some time.

Why wouldn't they try to save baby? I understand micro preemies can be difficult to work on, but that just doesn't seem right. Sorry to hear this.

Because the baby has not developed enough on its own to have chance of viability. 24 weeks is the viability point.

I agree with Aessary, this was not PE, this was the real thing. Was the hospital not equipped to handle a micro preemie?

Technically, eclampsia requires someone to actually seize...until then it's still "pre"... What she's describing is HELLP syndrome. But I'm so sorry your friend is going through this! I had a friend go through that shortly after I got married. It was tough to see...but her 26 weeker is still doing great!

Honestly I'm surprised they won't even try to resuscitate, but maybe they're just saying that because they doubt it would be effective. Where I used to work our littlest was 23 weeks I think but NICUs are able to help more and more all the time. I'm so sorry for your friend though...that is heartbreaking and I can't even imagine

Awful to hear. This has happened to three of my friends and it is heartbreaking.  I'm so sorry for your friend's loss.

This is definitely HELLP. It's awful, but there is no other cure to save the mother from death other than delivery. I had it. I started showing signs at 28 weeks and it hits so fast, I delivered at 30 weeks. It was only 6 hours between being admitted to delivery.
