A family member built us a beautiful crib, but it's a bit big. The measurements are 54in x 30in. We got a mattress that is 51.7in x 27in, so it moves around quite a bit. I am having a hard time finding a mattress with a perfect fit. Would you be comfortable with a mattress size of 52in x 28in? I don't know how much space a mattress cover and sheet would take. What is the general rule for fit-- 2 fingers on each side of crib? TIA!
Re: STM's- Crib mattress size
I would not feel comfortable with that at all. Our mattress fits snug and maybe one finger fits between the mattress and the rail. Can they modify the crib at all and make it to the proper dimensions? If they can't, I would explain why you can't use it and I would buy one.

That's when you start pulling up statistics showing deaths of children in cribs with non fitting mattresses. Its definitely not something to mess around with. Either it can be made smaller to fit a mattress properly or you buy a new one.
This.
I've been bickering with my husband all evening over this. He thinks its a real d!ick move to ask him to try to shrink it so the mattress will fit. I have no problem with this. I've told him over and over again about the risk of suffocation, but he thinks the baby would be fine if we added wood to the inside of the crib so the mattress would fit snug. He keeps saying it wouldn't be a problem because the wood would be even with the mattress. I see where he is coming from, but I don't feel comfortable about it. I told him if we can't get the crib to be shrunk down, I would rather the baby sleep in the PnP.
