Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Hands & Feet

My little guy is 9 months this week. And since he was about 6 months, he has been doing this movement with his hands and feet. The best way I can describe his hand movement is like he's revv-ing a motorcycle and he twirls his feet at the same time.

He only does it when he's anticipating something or tired/bored - normally while he's eating in the highchair or when he gets fussy. He doesn't do it while he's relaxed or playing at all.

He is hitting all his other milestones, but everyone mentions it and asks why he does that. Our pediatrician said, at the 6 month, appointment that it didn't bother her. But that was 3 months ago and I can't help but think it might be a sensory issue...

Any thoughts or helpful advice?? Thanks ladies :)

Re: Hands & Feet

  • There have been other posts asking about this.  I was hesitant to respond because I didn't want to upset or scare you.  The other posts have said this COULD be a stim meaning it might be a sign of autism, but it's probably nothing and your LO is just exploring his body and seeing what it can do.  There were a lot of responses on this topic with a lot of people saying their LOs do this and are completely normal and fine.  So I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

  • Babies are learning how to express themselves. When DD gets excited in her high chair she sticks her arms out and wiggles her toes-- does that mean she has autism? NO!

I wouldn't worry! And if you really are call the pediatrician and ask.
