Trying to Get Pregnant

Thanks insurance!

My husband and I have private insurance that we buy ourselves (not connected to our jobs at all). It is through United Health care called "Golden Rule". Well I was curious how much our deductible/co-pays would be for any prenatal appointments and for the delivery for our future, not conceived yet baby.

I called them and what did they say?

"We do not cover deliveries or ultrasounds"

WTF.  Thank god I'm not pregnant yet or else I probably would have freaked the f**k out. So now we have to hold off on TTC until we can get new insurance or my husband finds a full time job that offers affordable insurance.

I'm pretty bummed because I wanted to try for a spring baby.

Golden Rule sucks and always has. They like to up premiums too, just an FYI. Mine started at like $60 a month. 6 months later it was it was over $300.

I would hold off unless you are totally positive your husband will have a job before you will need either of those things. Will it cover prenatal visits?

I didn't ask about prenatal visits, I assumed they do because they specifically said "delivery and ultrasounds". I actually called back a second time and asked again because I couldn't believe it!

We definitely have to hold off now because I want the NT screening ultrasound done at 11 weeks.

I wonder if the Affordable Healthcare Act (aka Obamacare) is going to change anything (??). It seems pretty sexist that they exclude maternity care.

Why? Do you have a family history of genetic issues? If not, you may not be covered under many other plans as well. We have very good insurance and it will not cover unnecessary u/s. We don't have risk factors and my doctor would not code it as necessary. We would have had to pay OOP even with global maternity coverage.

I'm not touching your attempt to make that a sexist issue.

Even though an NT scan is not technically necessary, a lot of insurance plans will still cover it as "medically necessary." For instance, Amerihealth's policy is that "first trimester screening for fetal aneuploidy, including Down syndrome, is considered medically necessary and, therefore, covered" as long as the nuchal translucency, beta HCG, and PAPP A are performed. My doctor didn't have to indicate that she thought the test was medically necessary for me; she just had to order it, and then my insurance covered it. According to another insurance company, Aetna's, website, they consider it medically necessary too. However, it really depends on the company, as I know other people whose insurance did not cover this test. If this is something the OP wants to have done, if she switches insurance companies like she hopes, she should call the new insurance company or check the med policy section of their website to find out their stance on NT scans.

  • A lot private insurance doesn't cover anything maternity....the premiums get ridiculous when you throw in pregnancy coverage...Good luck.

  • I'm sorry that you were taken by surprise, but like PP said this is pretty common. Most private insurance plans don't cover any maternity costs. In my state, I have only found two providers that even offer a maternity rider. It's super expensive in my state, but if I can make it work with our budget it will be worth it to not put TTC on hold for a few more months. I'm praying that this Marketplace thing will be have some better options for us when it opens in October. Just have to wait and see I guess.
