My husband and I have private insurance that we buy ourselves (not connected to our jobs at all). It is through United Health care called "Golden Rule". Well I was curious how much our deductible/co-pays would be for any prenatal appointments and for the delivery for our future, not conceived yet baby.
I called them and what did they say?
"We do not cover deliveries or ultrasounds"
WTF. Thank god I'm not pregnant yet or else I probably would have freaked the f**k out. So now we have to hold off on TTC until we can get new insurance or my husband finds a full time job that offers affordable insurance.
I'm pretty bummed because I wanted to try for a spring baby.
Re: Thanks insurance!
I didn't ask about prenatal visits, I assumed they do because they specifically said "delivery and ultrasounds". I actually called back a second time and asked again because I couldn't believe it!
We definitely have to hold off now because I want the NT screening ultrasound done at 11 weeks.
I wonder if the Affordable Healthcare Act (aka Obamacare) is going to change anything (??). It seems pretty sexist that they exclude maternity care.
Even though an NT scan is not technically necessary, a lot of insurance plans will still cover it as "medically necessary." For instance, Amerihealth's policy is that "first trimester screening for fetal aneuploidy, including Down syndrome, is considered medically necessary and, therefore, covered" as long as the nuchal translucency, beta HCG, and PAPP A are performed. My doctor didn't have to indicate that she thought the test was medically necessary for me; she just had to order it, and then my insurance covered it. According to another insurance company, Aetna's, website, they consider it medically necessary too. However, it really depends on the company, as I know other people whose insurance did not cover this test. If this is something the OP wants to have done, if she switches insurance companies like she hopes, she should call the new insurance company or check the med policy section of their website to find out their stance on NT scans.
I really don't see how it's not...
