Stay at Home Moms

How much to charge for overnights?

The mom I sit for on the weekends needs an overnight sitter.  She just text'd me the times, but not the days.  She would need me from 9pm to 7am. I told her I would need more details to make a decision.

Right now she pays $50/day for every other Saturday and Sunday in my home (9hrs/day).

What would you charge?  Would you charge per block of time, per hour, or some other way?  What are your reasons?  What would your conditions be?

Re: How much to charge for overnights?

  • How old is the kid?  Do they STTN?  I'd be inclined to ask $75, but I also pay my sitters $12/hr.

  • The child is about 18mo. From what her mom says, she does not STTN at home. She usually wakes up to nurse. If she is at my house, I'm not sure that will be the case since she knows I can't nurse her. I will have to ask her mom about STTN.

She has been in my care at my house late in the past. I used to watch her until 11pm. When she stayed here that late, I put her down at 7/7:30pm and she typically slept until her mom got her at 11pm. A few times, before she was a year old, she would wake up to be fed BM bottle, but I don't think that's an option now. I believe her mom stopped pumping.

  • I pay my nieces $100 when they do overnights, but we are usually gone longer

I don't think I'm understanding this. So if she still wakes up to nurse, how can mom leave her overnight if there's no more pumped bottles? Can she be soothed back to sleep without eating?

I asked her mom about it and she said she would send a bottle of whole milk, just in case, but usually she can be soothed with just her pacifier.  She doesn't take pumped breast milk any more at 18mo, just BM from the boob.

  • Mom isn't doing this so she can stop nursing is she?  I would charge a lot more if that's the case :)  Otherwise, I would do $50 and commit to just one night as a trial run.  If she's up all night then I'd either raise the rate or tell her you can't do overnights.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

Oh no, I don't think it's about nursing at all, she is very AP. Mom is a pharmacist. She is looking at a job that is 7 days on and 7 days off.

That is a good idea about the trial run. I don't want to be up all night with the baby. I also would only work part of her work week. Her other sitter has offered to help out too.
