Trying to Get Pregnant

You ever start doing something you really want and then feel too old NTTGPR

I am taking my college placement exam today and I am so nervous, nervous about the test and being surrounded by a ton of kids. I dont know why but the thought of being the oldest person there makes me feel lame. I had to drop out of college when I was 20 to get an apartment and look after one of my cousins her parents refused and she was going to go into the system so now at almost 30 the stars have aligned and I have enough money to start anew and part of me thinks maybe I should just give up before I start that I'm too old to fulfill this dream. I have no idea why I'm afraid of it or why I think the teenagers will laugh at me. I dont know what I'm looking for but needed to say it to someone other than DH.

Good for you! Don't be nervous, I promise there are plenty of people your age still in school. I just finished my bachelors. I'm 26 and took night classes and there were a lot of people older than me in my classes. I actually preferred it because the class was more mature. Don't give up. GL!

  • My father went back to college in his late twenties he was 29 and graduated law school in his 30s. Plenty of people do it! When I was an education major there were many adult students in my classes. Also, working at a college, I can tell you our older students tend to be more motivated and often do better academically. I think you area making a great move! Good luck to you.

  • Even at the small private school I went to, 30 was by no means the oldest student in class.  I think you'll do great and if this is a dream of your's , it's never too late to chase it.

  • Most of my classes this semester (God willing that I do alright on the placement exam) will be online ones since child care is crazy expensive but I will be taking one on campus.

  • First of all you should be really proud of yourself for following your dreams. Don't worry about being older. Most likely there will be someone older than you! 30 is still young. Plus you'll be so relieved to get through it now. Think about it, if you don't do it now you could be 40 someday thinking about going back and you could have already gotten it over with! Stick with it and good luck. Being nervous is normal.
  • Congrats on going to college!! Never to old. I just finished my masters 2 years ago and I was 37. I went back to school later for a career change and had to get my BA and MA.
How awesome for you. You should be super proud of yourself to take this step!!!

I agree they do better academically. Also, when I was in college, I had so much respect for the older folks going back to school. Btw, 30 is not old in my book, even for going back to school!

  • There are plenty of people that go back to school later in life. My Mom went back in her 30's after dropping out to take care of me. She got her Bachelor's and her first Master's in her early 40's. DH is in school now getting his degree at 32. I was in college until my mid 20's and had similar thoughts as you; that I'd be surrounded by teenagers, but it totally wasn't the case.

Congrats and good luck to you!
  • Congrats on going back! When I was going back to grad school, I was lamenting about how "old" I would be when I graduated. My Dad said to me, "How old will you be in two years if you don't go back". Every time I get too focused on age I remind myself of this.

Also, my mother in law graduated from college last year at 72! She started school years ago, and in the process of raising 9 kids, left.  She got a standing ovation as she danced herself across the stage!

  • I think no one is ever "too old" to go back to school.  You're never too old to learn!  When I was in college, I started at a community college and in one of my classes was a 75 year old woman.  How amazing!  Then when I went to a larger university, there were several people in various classes I took that were in their 30s+.  Like I said, you're never too old to learn and you should never feel embarrassed!

  • My first semester of college there was a 78 year old man in the front row. We were all really surprised when the 25 year old professor walked in. You'll be fine lol, good for you for going back
  • Well the test wasn't too bad I pulled for Honors English but my Math was awful so looks like I will be starting with Remedial Math. As a huge confidence boost though I apparently dont look as old as I feel since one of the entering freshman tried to pick me up lol

    ::lurking::

When I went back to college, I started in remedial math as well, and on the 1st day of class they were teaching us the definition of a "digit."  I felt silly, but taking the lowest math gave me a strong foundation to build on, & I had a lot of "aha!" moments as my memory was refreshed on many of the concepts.

I'll be 32 when I graduate nursing school, & there are people in my class in their 40's & 50's. You're never to old to set & accomplish your goals!!
