Low platelets? With gallbladder pain?

I posted yesterday that I've been experiencing severe, constant, non-diet related gallbladder pain this week in my lower right ribcage. Ultrasound showed sludge and stones, so the doctors were fairly confident that's where the problem is. I was at the hospital today for IV pain meds and fluids, and noticed on my discharge paperwork that my platelets were on the low side at 115. They weren't concerned and thought it was just a benign pregnancy side effect and requested a retest in a week.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? If you had low platelets, how were you monitored? I don't have any other symptoms of pre-e or HELLP, and I *think* my pain is a bit too low to be HELLP. My blood pressure has been great, many times being below 100/65. But since my first child was born at 36 weeks due to severe pre-e and my second was delivered at 33 weeks due to possible atypical pre-e, it's definitely weighing on my mind as I wait for my OB appt tomorrow morning.

  • I can't offer any information on the gallbladder part but I had low platelets.  I happened to be on hospital bed rest so they took my blood daily to monitor it and I got down to like 90.  Nothing was prescribed or anything and I still had a c-section.  So, I would think that 115 would just mean blood work on a regular basis.

Thanks for sharing your story! I had a similar experience with my last pregnancy. Low platelets were discovered during hospitalized bedrest. I'm crossing my fingers that it can be monitored with out patient blood tests this time.

  • I had gallbladder problems during my pregnancy. I did whatever it took to make sure I didn't have to have surgery during pregnancy. I took Zofran every day and I had Phenergan on hand if I needed it. They can do surgery to remove your gallbladder when you're 28 weeks a long or later, but I'm diabetic so to me that was not an option.

I would get sharp pains under my right rib cage. I ended up getting my gallbladder out 4 months after I had my daughter.

Thanks for sharing your story! I'm 34 weeks so surgery is off the table unless it's an emergency  situation. I'm on strong narcotics every 4 hours in hopes I can last until 37 weeks!

  • I can't speak to gallbladder pain, but I did have HELLP and had the right side pain, it started a couple weeks before I ended up in the hospital. I had an a-typical presentation, the last thing to happen was my blood pressure went up...what do your pressures normally run? Part of my problem was that I normally ran 110/60, so even though I was running 130/75, no one was alarmed bc it was below the 140/90, but it was getting high for me.

thanks so much for replying. Did you have any other symptoms the two weeks prior to hospitalization? My bp typically is around 120/80, so it's been abnormally low the past couple months. I've also been worried about having some atypical presentation of pre e or HELLP. I had another full panel of bloodwork done yesterday to see if anything else popped up. Thanks again for your reply!

This is very similar to what happened with me. I delivered at 36 weeks due to HELLP. My BP didn't get high enough to alarm anyone. I had some swelling in my feet and legs the last week or two before I delivered, as well as some pain on the right side under my rib cage. I thought it was the baby pushing on my ribs. The night before I delivered, it was really severe pain, and I had severe vomiting. At that point, my BP was 170/110. When they did my labs at the hospital, my platelets were 60,000. I bet with your BP being so good and your platelets not being extremely low, they will just monitor you really closely! GL and hang in there!

  • My platelets are in that range normally. When pg they drop into 70's/80's. I get treated with prednisone as I near delivery to make sure they are above 100 because that is my hospitals cutoff for getting an epidural. During my first pregnancy I was tested for everything and there has been no cause identified for my low platelets.

  • Thanks for everyone's replies! I went back to L and D yesterday because my feet and ankles were very swollen, and the pain in my gallbladder area was so bad I couldn't keep anything down. Surprisingly, my labs still are in the normal range, although my enzymes were slightly elevated they were still within the normal range. So they pumped me full of fluids and sent me home. My bp was a little bit higher than it has been, but still under 120/80  I can't help but shake the feeling that something is starting though. I had severe pre-e with my first child and supposedly atypical pre-e with my second, and I have never felt this bad before. :( I wish I could enjoy the end of this pregnancy, but I really can't wait for it all to be over.
