Boy name for a girl

My BF wants Ryan for a girl's name. I am against using a typically one gender name for a child of the opposite gender due to all the headaches and teasing that could stem from it. Same reason I also don't like using unisex names having people confused upon reading your name if you're a boy or girl. I know there are perfectly lovely names that fall into these categories but I don't want to do that. He just has his heart set on little girl Ryan. I feel like me vetoing it makes me the mean uncompromising jerk.

  • You have every right to veto any name you don't like.

  • Can you use it for a middle name? I would say no to the first name spot, too.

Letting you husband know you don't like something and vetoing it does not make you a jerk. It just means you know how to communicate your feelings. Both people get veto rights, not matter what the name is.

I agree. I do love Ryan though. My DD is Ryann. Maybe using it as a MN would be a good compromise.

  • Compromise is key, but you should not use a name you dislike, there were a ton of names I love that I never got to use, to bad for me. Both our kids have names we both love now.

  • Usually lurk here. My name is Randi so I know all about teasing. It wasn't that bad though. Most kids are going to be teased about one thing or another anyway. I learned to brush it off.NBD. You are not unreasonable and have every right to veto. I love my name now and I love Ryan for a girl also. If you don't like the name that's one thing but I wouldn't worry too much about teasing, it builds character.
  • If you don'tlike it then don't use it. Your H should understand. I'm sure you can find a name you both like.

  • I do like some "unisex" names on girls...Ryan is not one of them. Stay strong.

  • My name is Ryan and I used to hate it as a kid, then the older I got the more I got to love it. I honestly don't think I could go by any other name. I think if you want to make it fit a girl you have to find a more feminine middle name. I think mine only works because that is how it is. Just my opinion on being a lady named Ryan =)

  • If this were a case of you actually disliking the name I'd say veto it. However, since in this case your reservation is that Ryan is much more common for boys, how about letting him get his wish while you choose a more feminine middle name? That way there are more options should you or she prefer something more decidedly feminine. (Then again, I like Ryan for a girl myself too.)
