3rd Trimester

Gestational Hypertension

I am 32 weeks and recently my blood pressure has been a bit high, not alarmingly high but higher than usual. The doctor has started my weekly appointments already to monitor it. The doctor doesn't think I have preeclampsia because I have no other symptoms, but wants me to do a 24 hour urine collection to rule it out. She thinks it is probably gestational hypertension. Has anyone else had this happen to them? If so, what did the remainder of your pregnancy turn out like?

Re: Gestational Hypertension

  • Mine didn't really hit until my 38 week appt, but it hit HARD then. He had me come back 2 days later (38w6d) for a BP check and then wound up inducing me that day for a BP of 155/101. Take it as easy as you can. Rest a lot, drink a lot of water and minimize salt in your diet. Good Luck!

  • I was diagnosed at 28 weeks, 2 weeks ago. I've been on meds since and it's working fine. My ob said that as long as I am responding to medication all should be well. FYI, I've never had a history of high BP in the past, or unhealthy lifestyle/eating habits. Sometimes it just happens and there is nothing you can do to improve it other than medication.

  • I have controlled pre existing hypertension.  During my first pregnancy my blood pressure got MUCH higher around 30 weeks, and I had to switch to weekly appointments.  I did 2 different 24 hour urine samples, my doctor did not find any protien in my urine, however, I did end up on bed rest around 31 weeks. I also had an ultra sound as well as an NST every week. I was induced a week early to be on the safe side.  I had a 53 hour labor, but DID deliver a healthy baby girl!! Just listen to the doctors orders!

  • Thanks everyone. The doctor said that I will probably have sonograms and be hooked up to the monitor at each visit...which I now know to be the NST monitor. But it is reassuring to hear from other moms.

I was diagnosed with hypertension at 37 weeks, I was taken out of work and put on modified bed rest. I have to monitor my Bp every day and at my weekly checks I also have a non stress test done just to make sure everything with baby is ok. They also have stripped my membranes, I am 39 weeks now, they would like me to deliver ASAP but have not talked about officially inducing me, which kind of scares me anyways. Good luck!

I was diagnosed with gestational hypertension during my first pregnancy. My BP started to rise at the doctor's office around week 20-21. I saw a high risk doctor in addition to my regular OB, monitored my BP daily, did the urine collection (twice), was on bed rest at 35.5 weeks and induced at 39 weeks. My BP was always higher at the doctor's office than home (anxiety too!). I agree with PP about drinking lots of water, getting as much rest as you can, and watching the salt intake. Good luck!
